ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY. This role is responsible for leading business development efforts within assigned markets, clients, or sectors. The Business Development Director owns pipeline development, client relationships, and pursuit strategy from early opportunity identification through win. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy and serves as a key driver of market intelligence, strategic positioning, and long-term relationship development. Responsibilities will include:
Market Ownership & Pipeline Development
- Own development and management of pipeline within assigned markets or client segments
- Identify, qualify, and prioritize opportunities aligned with company strategy
- Maintain a forward-looking pipeline that supports business goals
Client & Partner Relationship Strategy
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with clients, architects, engineers, and key partners
- Develop and execute relationship strategies for target clients and accounts
- Establish early positioning with clients prior to formal procurement
Pursuit Strategy Leadership
- Lead pursuit strategy from early identification through proposal and interview phases
- Define win strategies including positioning, messaging direction, and relationship leverage
- Partner with marketing and operations to execute pursuit strategy effectively
Opportunity Intelligence & Positioning
- Gather and synthesize intelligence on clients, competitors, and project dynamics
- Inform go/no-go decisions and pursuit strategies
- Apply insights to improve positioning and approach
Cross-Functional Alignment
- Collaborate with marketing, operations, and leadership to align on priorities and pursuits
- Communicate pipeline status, risks, and opportunities clearly
- Drive accountability for follow-through on pursuits and client engagement
CRM & Reporting Discipline
- Maintain accurate and meaningful CRM data to support pipeline visibility
- Provide regular updates on market activity and opportunity status
Industry Engagement
- Represent the company in industry and community organizations
- Support relationship development and market visibility
WHAT YOU NEED. To be successful in this role the Business Development Director will have:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in Business Development roles within the AEC industry.
- Arizona market experience with an established network of client and partner relationships.
- Experience in one or more of the following sectors: healthcare, higher education, government/municipal, or commercial construction.
- Proven track record of pipeline development, pursuit strategy, and converting relationships into awarded work.
- Strong ability to build rapport and establish trust with clients, partners, and internal stakeholders at all levels.
- Highly organized with demonstrated discipline in CRM management, pursuit tracking, and follow-through.
- Self-starter who operates with a high degree of autonomy and exercises sound judgment within established parameters.
- Experience managing or mentoring team members in a player-coach capacity.
- Active presence in industry and community organizations with a reputation for relationship-driven business development.
