What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Project Engineer position at Goodman?
The Construction Project Engineer will actively support the Owner’s construction and development team on Southern California data center developments. This role will report directly to the Sr Construction Manager and will work primarily with this person from the site construction office (currently in Vernon, CA).
Key Responsibilities
- Support execution of data center development projects from preconstruction through close-out.
- Coordinate between the general contractor, design consultants, commissioning agent, utilities, and internal teams.
- Review contractor reporting, budgets, change directives, and schedules to identify cost and schedule risks.
- Thorough review and understand of project plans, specifications, and Contract Documents for strong execution of project.
- Assist with GC and consultant procurement, including bid review and scope alignment.
- Support constructability reviews, logistics planning, and early works coordination.
- Assist with permitting and AHJ coordination, tracking approvals that impact construction start and energization.
- Assist with project budgeting, cost tracking, and monthly cost reporting.
- Review pay applications and change orders for completeness and alignment with scope.
- Maintain logs for RFIs, submittals, long-lead equipment, and key milestones.
- Support coordination with utility providers (power, water, telecom).
- Track utility-driven milestones, off-site improvements, and energization requirements.
- Flag risks related to utility timing or scope that may impact project schedules.
- Assist with coordination of design team deliverables.
- Review RFIs and submittals for consistency with development standards.
- Gain exposure to mission-critical systems, including electrical distribution, backup power, and cooling systems.
- Assist with punch list management and substantial completion.
- Support commissioning coordination and documentation tracking.
- Help assemble close-out documentation, including as-builts and O&M manuals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
- 3–5 years of experience in construction, project engineering, or owner’s representation.
- Experience supporting industrial, mission-critical, or large commercial projects.
- Strong understanding of construction documentation and project coordination.
- Proficiency in Excel and construction management software (e.g., Procore, Bluebeam).
- Exposure to data center or mission-critical construction.
- Familiarity with California permitting or utility coordination (or strong interest in learning).
- Experience reviewing pay applications, RFIs, and submittals.
- Experience working with general contractors or design consultants.
- Strong attention to detail with an ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Clear communicator with consultants and contractors.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment.
- Curious, coachable, and motivated to grow within a development platform.
