Foreign Language Interpreter

Wage compensation - Min: $23.56 Max: $33.68

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Primary purpose is to provide translation and interpreter services, both written and oral to Spanish speaking patients, their families, and staff throughout the clinic.   When not interpreting, incumbent will perform other duties in the clinic as assigned including clerical tasks, transporting and patient care. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Represents GSHCS in a professional manner while performing job duties for patients/families, physicians, visitors and/or other staff members as evidenced by appropriate language, dress, and conduct. Participates in the Performance Improvement Process.  Maintains quality and efficiency standards as set by immediate supervisor.  Makes recommendations for improvements. Participates in activities which promote professional growth and self-development.  Attends pertinent in-services, departmental and other meetings as requested by immediate supervisor. Adheres to GSHCS professional dress code. Identifies work-related problems with possible solutions and implements solution(s) when appropriate.

Maintains a constant awareness of communication issues in providing care at GSMG clinic and demonstrates this in decisions related to patient care and job performance. Maintains a thorough knowledge of patient confidentiality, and exercises judgment and genuine concern for patient’s ability to communicate effectively with medical provider. Confirms patient understanding by having them repeat back instructions.  Follows clinic principles, practices, standards, and techniques and demonstrates that knowledge in assisting patients within GSHCS policies and procedures.  Complies with adopted GSHCS and department policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Education:   Associates degree preferred or technical training as an interpreter required (OHA). Requires a diploma or GED.
2.  Certification:   Certification as a medical translator required.
3. License: OHA Certification Required
4.  Experience:   One year or more of experience in a health care or human services setting.
5. Job Knowledge:   Must demonstrate a fluency in the Spanish and English languages. Knowledge of medical terminology and interpreting and translating skills desired.
6.  Skills Required:   Must pass a written Spanish medical terminology assessment and interpreting skills evaluation.  Must also have excellent customer service and communication skills. Strong medical terminology background desired.
7.  Physical Requirements:  Good general health.  Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach. Frequent standing and/or walking 
8.  Working Conditions: Clean, well-lighted and ventilated work area.  Position requires mostly day shifts but also requires availability on all other shifts.  Weekend work may be included

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS:

1)            Knowledge in computers, phones, and other office equipment.

2)            Knowledge in insurance regulations and medical terminology.

3)            Knowledge in filing procedures and record documentation.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Inside environment protected from the weather, variable noise levels, occasionally subject to combative customers or verbal altercations with co-workers, subject to a rapid pace creating an unpredictable environment and subject to possible exposure to infection, contagious disease, or hazardous materials, just to name a few.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to:

1)            Perceive the nature of sound by ear.

2)            Express or exchange ideas by means of spoken words.

3)            Extend arms and hands in any direction.

4)            Use of hands and fingers.

5)            Stoop, kneel, crouch, lift up to 30 lbs., sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.

6)            Be self-motivated, dependable, neatly groomed and well organized.
