Job Purpose

The Assistant Director for Residential Student Conduct and Conflict is a key member of Gonzaga University’s Housing and Residence Life and Resolution Center for Student Conduct and Conflict teams. The Assistant Director is tasked with building a bridge of collaboration across Housing and Residence Life and Resolution Center for Student Conduct and Conflict, assisting with shared work of the conduct process, administrative oversight, policy review, addressing residential community concerns and providing regular development opportunities for staff and students. The Assistant Director plays a critical role in identifying and addressing community trends, encouraging student development, and facilitating solutions through the conduct process. The Assistant Director works to promote the core values of both departments including care, growth, common good, respect, open and honest communication, accountability and humanistic principles through each aspect of their role.

Essential Functions

  • 30% - Student Conduct Case Management
    • Performs job functions with a professional lens on the residential living community and student experience.
    • Utilizes professional knowledge and techniques while serving as a lead, primary University hearing officer and/or investigator for cases involving complex issues and/or cases resulting in University separation.
    • Manages and administers a high case load, while demonstrating effective administration of procedures involved in the case resolution process, such as findings, comprehensive communications, and confidential records administration.
    • Facilitates conflict resolution services, coaching consultations, mediation services, restorative practices, and alternative resolution processes.
    • Delivers services that promote equity in supporting historically unrepresented and marginalized students.
    • Develops and implements formative and administrative outcomes.
    • Provides guidance, oversight, and coaching for graduate student staff members and indirect supervision of undergraduate student staff members in the Resolution Center for Student Conduct and Conflict.
    • Oversees selection, training, feedback, and consultation for university conduct officers.
  • 30% - Administration and Operations
    • Attain and apply advanced (Level 5) proficiency in Maxient (conduct data management system) to assess and manage conduct cases efficiently and support timely resolution.
    • Serve as a key resource for training and troubleshooting Maxient use among conduct officers and campus partners, enhancing their confidence and competence.
    • Communicate critical case-related data (e.g., relocations, no-contact directives, suspensions, interim actions) to relevant stakeholders.
    • Monitor and analyze conduct data to identify behavioral trends and policy violation patterns in collaboration with essential campus collaborators for monthly and annual reports.
    • Share insights with campus partners, including year-over-year comparisons, case outcomes, officer caseloads, and appeal data.
    • Support entry-level staff in interpreting and utilizing data from Maxient and other platforms for informed decision-making.
    • Collaborate with Resolution Center and Housing and Residence Life peers and campus partners to review, revise, and communicate updates to the student code of conduct, Housing and Residence Life policies and other related policies.
    • Provide timely consultation and communication on policy changes and best practices to ensure alignment and transparency across campus units.
  • 30% - Collaborative partnerships, community development, trainings and education
    • Serves as a bridge between Housing and Residence Life, Resolution Center for Student Conflict and Conduct with the greater Gonzaga Community including but not limited to Campus Security and Public Safety, the Office of Health Promotion, Title IX and Cura Personalis.
    • Develops and implements ongoing training and education for student and professional staff members centered around residential trends, database management and student intervention.
    • Tracks residential community trends and needs, developing community response and action plans in conjunction with the Housing and Residence Life team.
    • Creates opportunities for student growth and community development that reflect the university's Jesuit, Catholic, humanistic mission.
    • Be in community with residential students, supporting their community and self-development, and addressing issues around interpersonal concerns and community connection.
    • Coaches and mentors residential conduct hearing officers through case management, outcome development and case follow-up.
    • Serves in the on-call and crisis response rotation for all residential (off campus as required) students, exercising discretion and judgement in resolving critical incidents.
    • Position deemed as essential personnel as an emergency responder to natural and human caused disasters.

    In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education.

    Skills & Abilities

    • Experience in Case Management Database, Maxient experience preferred
    • Knowledge of and ability to interpret complex policies, regulations and compliance related student concerns and conduct
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word
    • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
    • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical abilities and attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
    • Proven collaboration and team-building skills
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Demonstrated time management, punctuality, and priority setting skills

    • Ability to work flexible schedule including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree preferred
    • Degree in a field related to student development, education, counseling, law or conflict transformation
    • Experience in housing and residence life, student conduct, case management, and/or behavioral intervention
    • Understanding of challenges and barriers faced by communities around ethnicity, race, class, gender, privilege and oppression
    • Experience facilitating training sessions and workshops
    • Experience in conflict coaching, mediation and/or restorative practices processes

    The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $26.12 - $26.92 per hour

    Pay Range

    Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): 26.12

    Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): 32.64

    Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): 39.17
