Job Summary
The Specimen Technician (SPT I) provides essential support within the Specimen Processing Department, handling incoming specimens with accuracy, timeliness, and strong organizational skills. This role involves data entry, specimen handling, and adherence to strict compliance and quality standards in a fast-paced production environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general support functions in the Specimen Processing Department.
- Complete A-station work, presort, specimen pickup/delivery, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
- Enter data accurately with the ability to meet a productivity standard of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Learn and understand specimen types and regulatory compliance for test ordering, which may change daily.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of staff and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
- Maintain flexibility to meet evolving departmental demands and changing workflows.
- Work in a biohazard environment while practicing safe work habits.
- Keep work area neat, clean, and compliant with safety and quality standards.
- Be available for nightshift, weekends, holidays, on-call needs, and overtime based on staffing requirements.
- Support productivity, departmental completion times, and customer satisfaction goals.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
Required Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of computers.
- Ability to meet data entry productivity expectations.
Nice-to-Have Experience
- Previous laboratory or medical background (including medical terminology relevant to clinical laboratories).
- Experience in a hospital laboratory or production environment.
- Familiarity with laboratory testing or specimen processing.
