Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Specimen Technician to join our clinical laboratory team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing specimen collection, processing, and documentation to support accurate diagnostic testing. This role requires a strong foundation in laboratory procedures, medical terminology, and specimen handling techniques. The Specimen Technician plays a vital part in ensuring the integrity of samples and maintaining compliance with laboratory standards and safety protocols.
Duties
- Collect, label, and process biological specimens such as blood, urine, and tissue samples with precision and adherence to aseptic techniques
- Prepare specimens for testing by performing centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage according to established protocols
- Maintain accurate records of specimen collection, processing steps, and storage conditions in laboratory information systems
- Ensure proper handling of specimens to prevent contamination or degradation
- Assist with laboratory management tasks including inventory control of supplies and reagents
- Follow safety guidelines related to specimen handling, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper disposal procedures
- Support laboratory staff with routine tasks such as calibration of equipment and quality control checks
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals for specimen collection in clinical settings such as hospitals or outpatient clinics
- Maintain cleanliness and organization within the laboratory environment to ensure compliance with health and safety standards
Requirements
- Proven experience in clinical or research laboratory settings, including specimen collection and processing
- Knowledge of laboratory management systems, procedures, and medical terminology
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques such as venipuncture, phlebotomy, spinal tap procedures, and catheterization
- Strong understanding of physiology, anatomy, and related medical concepts relevant to specimen handling
- Experience with aseptic techniques to prevent contamination during sample processing
- Ability to perform basic life support (BLS) procedures when necessary
- Familiarity with hospital or veterinary terminology is a plus for specialized roles involving diverse specimen types
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to follow strict protocols
- Prior experience with laboratory procedures involving pediatrics or specialized fields such as cardiac catheterization is advantageous
- Must demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and the ability to work effectively within a team environment
