Job Summary
The Specimen Technician (SPT I) performs essential support functions within the Specimen Processing Department, ensuring accurate, timely handling of specimens in a high-volume production environment. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, data entry competency, and the flexibility to adapt to changing workflows and customer demands.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general support functions including A-station work, presort, specimen pickup/delivery, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
- Enter data accurately and meet productivity standards of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Learn and understand specimen types and test-related compliance regulations, which may change daily.
- Maintain accuracy, confidence, and timeliness in all specimen processing tasks.
- Handle nightshift assignments and remain available for weekends, holidays, on-call needs, and overtime.
- Work in a biohazard environment while practicing safe work habits.
- Communicate effectively with staff at all levels and support a positive, team-oriented environment.
- Adhere to departmental productivity, quality standards, and completion times.
- Keep work area clean and follow all safety, compliance, and core value policies.
- Demonstrate strong flexibility and an ability to adapt to daily operational changes.
Required Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of computers.
Nice-to-Have Experience
- Previous laboratory experience.
- Medical background including knowledge of medical terminology used in clinical labs.
- Experience in a hospital laboratory or production environment.
