Nature of Work
As a member of the Public Works Fleet Division, individuals in this level three position of our Fleet Mechanic (III) series are responsible for performing a wide array of preventative maintenance (PM’s) services to complex maintenance for various town divisions, including Police, Streets, Utilities, Parks, and Recreation, specifically, inspecting, diagnosing troubleshooting, modifying, warranty work, lubricating and repairing on Fleet vehicles and equipment including gas, diesel, electric, alternative fueled for pickups, SUV’s, police vehicles to heavy-duty dump trucks, various heavy equipment (snow and ice removal, street sweepers, sewer jet/vac truck, construction), equipment attachments, and small equipment such as trimmers, blowers, mowers, etc. Ensure the safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of our Town’s fleet. The Heavy Duty Mechanic III is essential in diagnosing and troubleshooting Heavy Duty specific gasoline systems, diesel systems, pony motor assemblies, chassis, electrical, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, brakes, differentials and transfer cases, module diagnostics, aftertreatment systems transmission systems; keeping our fleet in optimal condition and ensuring the entire fleet of equipment is in safe operating condition, following the rules and regulations of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), State regulations, local regulations, and department policies. The position assists in monitoring and maintaining the fueling, DEF, and lubricant systems, along with the Town’s wash bay and electric vehicle charging stations. Helps lead and mentor less experienced Fleet Technicians aspiring to grow their knowledge base in the field of Fleet maintenance.

- Performs maintenance and journey-level mechanical repairs on all town Fleet units, consisting of light-duty trucks and automobiles, heavy-duty trucks and equipment, turf and agricultural equipment, and small engine equipment in a timely manner. These include, but are not limited to dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, street sweepers, sewer equipment, pickups, trailers, forklifts, passenger vehicles, police vehicles, as well as electric vehicles. Repairs may be performed in the shop environment or in the field as necessary.
- Performs Department of Transportation inspections on all commercial vehicles as defined by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration standards.
- Properly diagnoses vehicle and equipment mechanical defects and determines proper solutions.
- Repairs/rebuilds broken, worn, defective, inefficient, or unsafe vehicle and equipment components, including braking, suspension, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, heating/cooling, and engine systems using approved ASE methods and practices.
- Works with Fleet Manager to design OEM and aftermarket upfitting solutions to provide utilization options for customers.
- Installs OEM and aftermarket accessories into new and existing vehicles as directed by the Fleet Manager.
- Use of fabrication skills as needed to achieve necessary repairs and modifications in areas of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, metalwork, and other areas of vehicle and equipment operations.
- Performs pre-and post-trip inspections, preventative maintenance checks and minor repairs on division’s equipment and other town vehicles to ensure they operate properly.
- Safely drive and operate Town of Windsor vehicles and town-owned equipment for preventative maintenance services.
- Lubricate moving parts, refill fluids, and replace belts, hoses, wiper blades, and tires.
- Complies with the proper storage, use, and disposal of hazardous fuels, oils, lubricants, and cleaners.
- Assists manager in monitoring and maintaining the Town’s wash bay and electric vehicle charging stations.
- Documents all services performed, as well as recording any parts and supplies ordered/used in accordance with established record-keeping procedures.
- Performs snow operation tasks by shoveling, plowing, removing, and hauling snow and ice, along with applying deicers to streets and roads.
- Clean equipment and Public Services Facility shops and yard areas as necessary.
- Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
- Responds to emergencies or after-hours call-outs as needed.
- Performs a variety of heavy laboring activities including the use of hand tools, light power equipment, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

- The Fleet Mechanic (III) position is part of the snow removal program which includes scheduled on-call responsibilities typically during the months of October to April. Fleet Mechanic III’s are required to review and acknowledge the Snow Guidelines annually.
- The Fleet Mechanic (III) position participates in the Shared Fleet Vehicle Program, which requires an annual motor vehicle record check.
- May be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions.
- Continues educational and certification requirements in order to remain abreast of current methods and procedures.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
- Minimum high school diploma or GED.
- Must be 21 years of age by the first date of employment.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in automotive, light truck, medium, and heavy-duty truck maintenance and/or repair and other equipment maintenance operations.
- Preferred completion of an accredited college, university, or vocational education program in the areas of automotive technology and repair, diesel repair, or heavy-duty equipment repair.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
- For internal applicants, two (2) years of experience as a Heavy Duty Mechanic II for the Town of Windsor is required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class “B” Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement that meets the Town of Windsor’s standards or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
- Must possess and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
- One or more ASE Master Certifications are highly desired; Ability to obtain and maintain one ASE Master Level Certification within three (3) years of hire in either:
- Medium/Heavy-Duty Trucks T1 – T8 (T4 and T8 required with one year of employment, no matter the Master Level Certification).
- Certifications from major manufacturers such as International, Allison, CAT, John Deere, Bendix, Cummins, etc., may be considered in lieu of ASE if they are deemed equivalent.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning certification as specified under section 609 of the Clean Air Act by an EPA-approved program within one (1) year of employment.
