DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Supervise veterinarian technician and veterinary assistant.
The Veterinarian is responsible for performing all surgical procedures, including spaying/neutering of dogs and cats (pre-pubescent); monitors the administration of anesthesia to animals; monitors recovery of animals and performs post surgical evaluation and repair; conducts pre-examination of dogs and cats scheduled for sterilization; conducts examination of owned dogs and cats, for the purpose of evaluating general health and possible injuries; provides emergency and non-emergency care of sheltered animals; evaluates health and vital statistics of impounded animals and authorizes release of animals from rabies quarantine; acts as veterinarian on record to purchase items from pharmaceutical companies; signs various documents including rabies certificates.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
- Provide medical evaluation and care for animals impounded and sheltered within the Animal Control shelter.
- Monitors animals impounded for rabies quarantine and evaluates them at end of quarantine period as to whether they are symptomatic or asymptomatic.
- Organize and participate in the annual Rabies Clinics conducted in each district of the Community.
- Conduct pre-examination of dogs and cats scheduled for sterilization to determine their ability to withstand surgery.
- Supervise post-operation checks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery.
- Perform surgical procedures to animals when required.
- Conduct health evaluations of dogs and cats owned by Community members for diagnosis and treatment or referral as needed and for rabies and health vaccinations through scheduled appointments.
- Conduct training of shelter staff in euthanasia, disease control and prevention in shelter and clinic environment.
- Continue research and maintenance of safe and efficacious medical protocol regarding anesthesia and surgery.
- Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by veterinary staff and animal control staff.
- As available, triage emergency medical situations on animals and make recommendations.
- Actively promote spay and neuter, and educate clients on responsible animal ownership.
- As needed, liaison with public health officer when dealing with zoonotic diseases or zoonotic outbreaks with the Community.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge in evaluating animals for abuse, cruelty and neglect.
- Knowledge of a wide range of diseases, symptoms, diagnostic tools and techniques, medicines and surgical procedures associated in treating animals.
- Knowledge of pre-pubescent sterilization of puppies and kittens.
- Knowledge of report preparation and record keeping.
- Knowledge of modern office practices and IT equipment, and computer software applications Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Knowledge dealing with proper lifting and transport of sick/injured animals.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 10 lbs and maximum of 50 lbs.
- Ability to effectively plan, supervise and coordinate work of others.
- Ability to communicate professionally, respectfully and effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
- Ability to oversee the performance of a variety of general clerical work.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the general public.
- Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from an accredited Veterinary College with four (4) years experience in veterinary care, veterinary medicine or animal care/control and experience in performing spaying/neutering surgery and a minimum of forty (40) continuing education units (CEU’s) per year required to remain compliant with State’s licensing requirements, and which includes two (2) years supervisory experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Current Arizona license to practice veterinary medicine (per A.R.S. 32-2215 et seq).
- Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) License to prescribe and order scheduled drugs and medicines.
- Receive a full series of pre-exposure rabies immunizations within first ninety days of employment. Medical inability to immunize (must sign a release of liability) or previous immunization must be verified by a certified physician prior to start of employment.
- Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with a current proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application.
- Required to pass a background check.
