Starting Pay:

Recruit:   $19.39              Deputy I:  $23.55

Pay dependent upon education and experience.

JOB SUMMARY - The job duties of a Deputy include but are not limited to perform general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property within Geary County; to patrol county areas; to make investigations at the scene of a crime or traffic accident; to provide security at the Geary County Courthouse; to perform the duties of first responder to accidents;  to enforce all federal, state, and local law resolutions; and to provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to County residents and the general public.  Employees may be assigned to one or more functional areas.  Performs other duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties described below are indicative of what a Deputy might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County Resolutions for the position of Deputy. This position description is not designed to list all tasks and responsibilities of this position. Geary County reserves the right to revise or change job duties as the need may arise. This position description does not constitute a written or implied contract of employment.

 

Law Enforcement.  Patrols county and related areas to preserve law and order.  Answers a variety of calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, robberies, domestic disturbances, other misdemeanors and felonies, and citizen assistance calls.  Conducts initial investigations and gather evidence.  Contacts witnesses and make arrests.  Assists and work with outside agencies on the apprehension of criminals and investigations.  Transports prisoners to court and testify in court on related activities.  Serves civil court processes and warrants.  Performs security checks of business and residential properties.  Completes reports and records.  Inspects equipment for compliance with standards.

 

Offender Registration.  Assists Investigations with tracking of Registered Offenders.

Investigations.  Investigates felony crimes and misdemeanors to determine suspect(s).  Prepares reports for presentation in court and testify in court.  Locates and collects physical evidence, latent fingerprints, etc.  Reviews cases for completeness and accuracy. Prepares affidavits for search warrants and arrest warrants.  Conducts interviews and interrogations.  Searches for witnesses and suspects.  Obtains statements and confessions.  Conducts surveillance, check active areas for criminal activity.  Investigates all county deaths classified as coroner cases to determine cause and manner of death.  Takes both still and video photographs for evidence.  

Ancillary Duties.  Patrols area lakes for fish and game violators.  Provides security for Geary County courthouse.  Captures stray animals.  Serves as first responder to emergency situations until medical unit arrives.  May be involved in additional specialized functions such as: hazardous materials, aircraft rescue, swift water rescue.  Assists with jail bookings.  Assists Sergeant as needed and directed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment. All Deputy applicants must meet Kansas Cpost requirements. Office hiring requirements/ hiring process includes; application, Written and Physical testing, Interviews, Interview Boards, Background Investigation, Ride Along(s), Psychological Assessment, Physical Assessment, UA, Command Review and Sheriff Interview.

Non- certified applicants must successfully complete the Law Enforcement Academy. All applicants, prior certified, newly certified or laterals must complete the appropriate FTO program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Obtain certification through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center
  • Ability to obtain within 1 year of employment, and maintain throughout employment the following licenses, certifications, and training:  radar, taser, CPR, and first aid.
  • A valid Kansas driver’s license.
  • Must reside within a 30 minute radius of worksite within 90 days of employment.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of law enforcement techniques and standards.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for VIN inspections.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to comprehend, retain and apply County, State, and Federal policies and legislation, i.e. local ordinances, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, safety manuals; and warning labels.

 

EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Ability to operate various types of equipment – standard office equipment, fax, scanner, computer, and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to operate computerized fingerprinting system.
  • Ability to operate emergency vehicles, radios, radar equipment, firearms, taser, DUI enforcement and other related law enforcement equipment.
  • Ability to use GIS and other systems/software.
  • Other equipment could be required.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional and friendly manner with customers, citizens, co-workers, and management.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.
  • Ability to develop, interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, Federal, State, and local regulations, SDS sheets, safety manuals, operating and repair manuals, etc.; and warning labels.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

 

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
  • Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.
  • Ability to use good judgment and effectively solve problems.

Work Environment:

  • Works in both an indoor setting as well as outdoors.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather when required.
  • Due to the volume, scope, size of staff and nature of public service this office provides, full-time regular attendance is essential.
