Cytopreparation Technician — Part-Time

Anticipated start: April 1, 2027
Schedule: Anticipated daytime assignments, approximately 480 hours annually based on government estimates. Actual hours and scheduling depend on task orders.

About the position

GD Resources LLC is seeking a part-time Cytopreparation Technician to prepare clinical specimens for cytologic examination at the Memphis VA Medical Center. This role supports specimen intake, slide preparation, laboratory organization, and equipment maintenance.

Employment is contingent on contract award, government acceptance of the candidate, and successful completion of required onboarding. Hours are not guaranteed.

Responsibilities

• Receive, log, accession, and verify specimens and accompanying request forms.

• Identify labeling or documentation discrepancies and follow appropriate corrective procedures.

• Record specimen characteristics and the number of slides or smears received.

• Prepare specimens using centrifugation, smearing, cell-block production, staining, and coverslipping techniques.

• Process gynecologic and nongynecologic samples using liquid-based cytology equipment.

• Inspect slide preparations for staining and preparation quality and take corrective action when needed.

• Assist with instrument calibration, troubleshooting, and required test runs.

• Maintain accession logs and organized slide files.

• Clean glassware and equipment, monitor reagents, and maintain an orderly work area.

• Collect specimens from designated laboratory areas and stock or distribute supplies as assigned.

• Handle potentially infectious materials safely and follow infection-control procedures.

Required qualifications

• High-school diploma or equivalent.

• Appropriate experience and practical knowledge of cytopreparation methods and laboratory procedures.

• Knowledge of laboratory safety and infection-control practices.

• Ability to follow written procedures and maintain detailed, accurate records.

• Computer proficiency and ability to work with laboratory information systems.

• Strong organizational, communication, and attention-to-detail skills.

• Currently reside within 75 miles of the Memphis VA Medical Center.

• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

• U.S. citizenship, as required for access to VA computer systems under this contract.

Preferred qualifications

• At least one year of experience in cytology, histology, pathology, or a clinical laboratory.

• Experience with liquid-based cytology preparation systems.

Professional licensure and national certification are not required for this position.

Onboarding requirements

Selected candidates must complete VA-required background screening, fingerprinting, orientation, privacy/security training, and system-access procedures. Current BLS documentation, required health records, and acceptable federal-facility identification must be provided before assignment, as applicable.
