Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Shop Foreman to lead high‑spec stainless steel and Schedule 80 PVC fabrication operations supporting AWS D17.1 and ASME code work. This role is intended for a hands‑on authority figure with a strong background in stainless steel TIG welding, stainless pipe fitting, and industrial PVC systems who understands code compliance, inspection readiness, and production accountability.
The Shop Foreman holds direct authority over shop personnel, workflow, and production quality, and serves as the final shop‑level sign‑off authority prior to QA/QC release.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision and leadership to stainless steel TIG welders, stainless pipe fitters, and PVC fabrication personnel
- Oversee fabrication of stainless steel piping systems and Schedule 80 PVC piping assemblies
- Enforce compliance with AWS D17.1, ASME, and applicable PVC fabrication standards
- Ensure strict adherence to WPS, drawings, specifications, adhesive/solvent procedures, and inspection criteria
- Assign work, set daily priorities, and control manpower allocation across stainless and PVC work scopes
- Verify stainless fit‑ups, welds, and PVC joints are inspection‑ready prior to QA/QC review
- Serve as the final production sign‑off authority before work is released to QA/QC
- Coordinate with QA/QC, engineering, and management to resolve technical issues
- Maintain shop safety standards, housekeeping, and tool control
- Train, mentor, and hold personnel accountable to performance expectations
- Oversee and approve weld tests, fit‑up tests, and PVC fabrication evaluations
Authority, Hiring & Personnel Control
The Shop Foreman holds direct authority over shop personnel and is responsible for maintaining staffing levels, performance standards, and workforce discipline in support of production and quality objectives.
The Shop Foreman is authorized to:
- Interview, evaluate, and recommend candidates for hire, including welders, pipe fitters, and PVC fabrication personnel
- Approve or reject candidates based on weld tests, fit‑up tests, PVC fabrication tests, and demonstrated capability
- Directly assign, reassign, or remove personnel from stainless or PVC work based on performance or skill level
- Issue corrective actions for quality, safety, attendance, or performance deficiencies
- Recommend suspension or termination for failure to meet company, safety, or code requirements
- Immediately remove personnel from work for safety violations, quality concerns, or non‑compliance with AWS D17.1 / ASME or PVC fabrication standards
Final employment actions are executed in coordination with management; however, the Shop Foreman’s recommendation carries primary weight in all shop personnel decisions.
Production & Quality Authority
- Acts as the final shop‑level authority for production readiness prior to QA/QC release
- Has full authority to stop work for quality, safety, or compliance concerns
- Has authority to reject stainless fit‑ups, welds, or PVC joints prior to inspection and require corrective action
- Ensures only qualified and approved personnel perform code or PVC fabrication work
- Holds shared accountability for minimizing rework and maintaining inspection pass rates
Sign‑Off Responsibility
- Serves as production sign‑off authority confirming work is complete, inspection‑ready, and compliant with drawings and procedures
- Verifies that stainless work meets AWS D17.1 / ASME requirements
- Verifies that Schedule 80 PVC fabrication meets specified procedures, alignment, joint integrity, and cure requirements
- Confirms personnel are working within approved procedures and scope of qualification
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Shop Foreman, Lead Welder, or Lead Pipe Fitter
- Strong working knowledge of AWS D17.1 and ASME code fabrication
- Hands‑on experience with stainless steel TIG welding and stainless pipe fitting
- Experience overseeing Schedule 80 PVC fabrication (cutting, fitting, bonding, assembly)
- Ability to read and interpret WPS, isometrics, blueprints, weld symbols, and PVC drawings
- Demonstrated leadership, decisiveness, and accountability
Preferred (Top‑Tier Qualifications)
- Experience leading high‑tolerance stainless fabrication teams
- Familiarity with inspection hold points, traceability, and documentation
- Proven ability to reduce rework through upfront quality control
- Experience supporting AWS D17.1 TIG welding programs
- Experience managing mixed stainless and PVC production environments
