Sr. Land Surveyor Supervisor
The Sr. Land Surveyor Supervisor plays a pivotal role in leading GBAs survey operationsbridging the gap between technical execution and strategic leadership. Through operational discipline, technical expertise, and commitment to developing people, this position ensures that GBA continues to deliver remarkable solutions for clients and sustained growth for the survey team. This role could be located in our Lenexa, KS Headquarters, any regional office, hybrid or remote.
Scope of Responsibility
The Sr. Land Surveyor Supervisor is responsible for overseeing multiple survey projects and supervising both supervisors and survey teams across the organization. This role focuses on people management, including team development, performance management, and mentorship. The Sr. Land Surveyor Supervisor ensures that projects are properly staffed, workloads are balanced, and teams have the necessary resources to succeed. Additionally, the position monitors overall project performance, promotes a culture of accountability and quality, and facilitates effective communication between teams and leadership.
This individual also supports strategic planning, staffing decisions, and organizational initiatives, while fostering a productive, collaborative, and safe work environment.
Technical Skills & Abilities
- Leads field and office survey teams, providing daily guidance, support, and coaching.
- Promotes a positive, safety-first culture and fosters teamwork and accountability across all levels of the survey function.
- Mentors staff in technical development, project delivery, and professional growth.
- Conducts regular performance check-ins, supports annual review process, and identifies opportunities for advancement.
- Oversees project setup, scheduling, and resource allocation to ensure timely completion and client satisfaction.
- Reviews survey data, calculations, and deliverables for accuracy and completeness.
- Implements standard operating procedures and QA/QC processes established by the Survey Group Leader.
- Monitors project progress, performance metrics, and workload balance across teams.
- Provides technical support to Project Managers and field crews to resolve complex project issues.
- Applies advanced mathematics, coordinate geometry, and boundary law principles to guide technical work.
- Ensures compliance with state licensing, safety regulations, and company policies.
- Coordinates with Project Managers, Engineers, and Market Leaders to align survey scope, schedules, and deliverables.
- Participates in client communications related to project execution, changes, or technical questions.
- Supports proposal preparation and scoping activities as needed.
- Represents the Survey Group professionally in client interactions and project meetings.
Education & Experience
- Bachelors degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in appropriate jurisdiction (required).
- 7 years of progressive experience in surveying, with at least 23 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
- Advanced understanding of boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, right-of-way, and construction staking surveys.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, GPS, and LiDAR workflows.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead diverse teams and resolve complex issues.
- Demonstrated experience managing field crews, office staff, and multiple concurrent survey projects.
Physical & Travel Requirements
- May require travel to field sites, client meetings, or regional offices.
- Must be able to work in both office and outdoor environments.
