Job Title: Asphalt Plant Operator
Location: Asphalt Plant
Department: Operations / Asphalt Division
Reports To: Materials Director

The Asphalt Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the asphalt plant. This role oversees plant production, material inventory, order fulfillment, truck loading, traffic control, ticketing, and customer sales while maintaining quality standards and ensuring safe plant operations.
Key Responsibilities
Plant Operations
· Operate and monitor asphalt plant systems to produce asphalt mix in accordance with job specifications and production schedules
· Start up, shut down, and troubleshoot plant equipment including conveyors, dryers, silos, burners, and controls
· Maintain consistent mix quality by monitoring temperatures, gradation, and asphalt content
· Communicate with field crews, dispatch, and management to coordinate production needs
Inventory & Materials Management
· Monitor inventory levels of aggregates, liquid asphalt (AC), additives, and fuel
· Order raw materials as needed to maintain uninterrupted production
· Coordinate deliveries with suppliers and verify quantities and quality upon receipt
· Track usage rates and report shortages or discrepancies
Loadout, Traffic & Yard Management
· Load customer and company trucks accurately and efficiently
· Direct truck traffic safely within the plant yard
· Ensure trucks are loaded to proper weights and comply with DOT requirements
· Maintain orderly truck flow to minimize delays and congestion
Button House & Controls
· Operate the button house / control room to manage plant functions
· Monitor alarms, system readings, and production data
· Adjust plant settings to maintain optimal performance and product quality
Ticketing, Sales & Documentation
· Manage scale house operations, tickets, and material sales
· Accurately weigh trucks and issue load tickets
· Collect and record customer sales information
· Reconcile daily production, inventory usage, and sales reports
· Ensure all tickets and records are complete, accurate, and submitted timely
Safety, Maintenance & Compliance
· Enforce plant safety procedures and ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards
· Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance
· Report equipment issues and coordinate repairs as needed
· Maintain housekeeping standards throughout the plant and yard
· Comply with environmental regulations related to asphalt production
Qualifications & Experience
· High school diploma or equivalent (required)
· Previous asphalt plant, aggregate plant, or heavy equipment experience (preferred)
· Experience operating asphalt plant controls and loadout systems (preferred)
· Basic computer skills for ticketing and inventory systems
· Strong understanding of safety practices in industrial or construction environments
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· Ability to multitask and manage production, inventory, and traffic simultaneously
· Strong attention to detail for mix quality, weights, and ticketing accuracy
· Effective communication with truck drivers, customers, and crew members
· Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
· Ability to work long hours, early mornings, nights, and weekends during paving season
Physical Requirements
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
· Ability to climb stairs and ladders
· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
· Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods
Work Environment
· Industrial asphalt plant environment
· Exposure to heat, dust, noise, and moving equipment
· Fast-paced, production-driven setting during peak season
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must have the ability to work extended hours as required by the workload.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in all types of terrain
- Able to meet all physical requirements such as standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting 50 pounds or more.
- Ability to work around loud noises and can tolerate being exposed to odors, gasses, dust, minimal radiation, etc.
- Must be able to work in extreme temperatures, in confined spaces, and in excavated areas.
