GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs repairs and maintenance work necessary to maintain County Road and Bridge Department vehicles and equipment in good condition and respond to calls during off hours as required. These positions will also troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical problems as needed. The Mechanic levels are distinguished from one another by the independence of work, level of skills, education, and training required in each position. The position levels represent an internal career ladder and professional growth opportunity, and may be filled at either the level I, II, or III based upon the expertise of the applicant.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Equipment Mechanic I: Works under close supervision and performs basic and routine mechanical work while gaining mastery. The Mechanic I is an entry-level position, designed to provide on-the-job training.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: Works independently under minimal supervision and performs more technical maintenance and diagnostic services. The Mechanic II is a journey-level position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Equipment Maintenance & Diagnostics:

  • Responsible for routine maintenance such as safety inspections, changing oil and filters, and replacing brakes. Performs DOT inspections on equipment and vehicles.
  • Responsible for a wide variety of routine and complex heavy vehicle repair and maintenance according to level and ability. Repair and maintenance may include gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic and brake systems, and other major equipment components, as necessary.
  • Complete a variety of highly skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance on heavy vehicles and equipment including excavators, dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, and loaders.
  • According to level and ability, responsible for fabricating, welding, and modifying parts and equipment. Level III performs welding duties as a welder, operating welding equipment, cutting torch, grinder, drill press and related hand tools to fabricate equipment parts or repair parts as needed.
  • Drives all job-related vehicles and heavy equipment.

Division/Department Support:

  • May transport operators and parts in the field.
  • Maintains and submits equipment repair and maintenance records.
  • Orders parts and supplies for equipment in accordance with County purchasing and receiving procedures. May assist in annual inventory of supplies and tools.
  • May train new staff as required based on experience level.

Other duties as assigned.
