The Site Superintendent is the on-site leader responsible for the daily execution of heavy civil construction projects including highways, bridges, earthwork, underground utilities, and marine or drainage structures. This role drives schedule, safety, quality, and workforce performance across all phases of field operations. The Superintendent serves as the primary point of contact between the field crew, subcontractors, owner representatives, and project management.
Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee all on-site construction activities, ensuring work is executed in accordance with plans, specifications, permits, and contract requirements
- Lead daily pre-task planning meetings, crew briefings, and subcontractor coordination to align sequencing, equipment deployment, and manpower
- Enforce and champion a zero-incident safety culture; conduct daily site inspections, JSA reviews, toolbox talks, and incident investigations
- Monitor production rates and schedule adherence; identify delays, conflicts, or resource gaps and implement corrective measures immediately
- Review and interpret civil drawings, grading plans, utility layouts, and shop drawings to direct field personnel accurately
- Coordinate with engineers, inspectors, surveyors, and testing agencies to ensure quality benchmarks are met at every phase
- Manage subcontractors and specialty trades on-site — verify scopes, track performance, and document deviations
- Maintain detailed daily field reports, work logs, crew timesheets, and photographic documentation
- Identify and document scope changes; communicate promptly to project management for change order processing
- Coordinate staging areas, access routes, material deliveries, and equipment scheduling to maximize site efficiency
- Mentor foremen and craft workers; foster a culture of accountability, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement
Requirements
- Minimum 8–10 years of progressive field experience in heavy civil construction
- Demonstrated experience as a superintendent or senior foreman on projects exceeding $5M
- Proficiency reading civil, structural, and utility drawings and specifications
- Working knowledge of earthwork, grading, paving, drainage, and underground utilities
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (required); First Aid/CPR current
- Valid driver's license; ability to operate company vehicles and access remote sites
- Proficient in scheduling tools (Primavera P6 or MS Project) and daily reporting software
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to lead crews of 20–100
