Fye Excavating, Inc. is seeking experienced, safety‑focused Heavy Equipment Operators to join our team. Qualified candidates should be proficient in operating a range of construction equipment, including dozers, loaders, excavators, skid steers, haul trucks, and related attachments. This position is vital to the success of our projects and requires a solid commitment to safety, efficiency, and teamwork.
In addition to operating heavy equipment, the Heavy Equipment Operator will be responsible for performing routine inspections, completing preventative maintenance, and assisting with minor repairs as needed. Operators will also support site preparation by staging materials, tools, and equipment, and may help with utility installation and other construction‑related tasks. This role requires working outdoors year‑round in a variety of weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy machinery in compliance with company procedures and safety standards
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and document performance and maintenance needs
- Perform basic maintenance and cleaning to ensure equipment remains in good working condition
- Assist mechanics with minor repairs and report major issues to supervisors
- Load and unload materials and equipment safely and efficiently
- Support grading, trenching, backfilling, and compacting operations
- Assist with installation of site utilities, such as water, sewer, and storm systems
- Maintain clear communication with site supervisors and crew members
- Follow all local, state, and federal safety regulations
- Uphold a clean and organized work environment
- Participate in site setup and teardown, including fencing, signage, and traffic control
- Operate equipment in tight or challenging spaces with precision and care
- Monitor surroundings to ensure the safety of coworkers and pedestrians
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years experience operating heavy equipment in a construction setting
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions
- Strong understanding of equipment safety standards and operational procedures
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a team
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with GPS or laser-guided grading systems
- Familiarity with underground utility installation
- Ability to read and interpret site plans or blueprints
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting equipment issues
- Completion of OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Course
