What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Highway Tractor / Mower Operator position at Freeborn?
Freeborn County is accepting applications for 40 hour a week Seasonal Highway Tractor/Mower Operator in the Highway Department. The position is responsible for mowing roadside ditches throughout the county highway system using large agricultural tractors and “batwing” style mowers. Previous experience operating agricultural equipment is mandatory. Applicants must have a valid Minnesota Driver’s license, must be 18 years of age, must have good communication skills, and able to lift 70 pounds occasionally. High school graduate or GED preferred.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Ability to perform any combination of the following duties:
- Inspection of equipment at the start and end of each workday to identify worn components, request preventative maintenance, report damage, and maintain equipment in safe running order
- Grease, fuel, and check fluids in equipment every workday
- Operate agricultural tractors under stressful conditions including on steep slopes, near obstacles, while under traffic
- Process multiple cues in their environment simultaneously
- Load and haul trash encountered in the right of way to keep roadsides clean
- Work well with others as a part of a team
Ability to safely operate the following equipment:
- Pickup trucks
- Utility vehicles
- Motorized hand and power tools
- Tractors
- Weed trimmers
- Hand mowers
- Zero-turn and winged rotary mowers
- Trailers
- Other highway-related equipment
OTHER POSITION FUNCTIONS:
- Assist other county staff as assigned
- Other duties as apparent or assigned
REQUIREMENTS
WORKING CONDITIONS: 90% Field; 10% Maintenance Facility
Employees required to work outdoors in all weather conditions during the months of May through October. Weather conditions encountered may include heat, cold, rain, snow, sleet, wind, etc. Safety boots must be worn at all times.
HOURS OF WORK:
40 hours per week, typically Monday – Thursday, 6:00 am – 4:30 pm.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to perform all essential position functions
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Driver’s License
- Must be 18 years of age by the first date of employment
- Must be able to communicate effectively with the public and co-workers
- Must be able to lift 70 pounds and work in a variety of weather conditions
- Must be neatly groomed
- Must be able to physically perform the job duties assigned
- Must be punctual and present on all scheduled days
