Fred Smith Company is seeking an experienced Asphalt Superintendent in our Wilson, NC location to oversee field operations, lead crews, and ensure high-quality asphalt paving projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all specifications.
The Asphalt Superintendent is responsible for supervising and directing field personnel in subgrade preparation, asphalt placement, and compaction. This role works closely with the Operations Manager to execute project plans, manage crews, and maintain performance standards across multiple job sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise crews in all aspects of asphalt paving, including subgrade preparation, laydown, and rolling
- Ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and in accordance with specifications and company standards
- Coordinate daily work activities based on direction from the Operations Manager
- Promote a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Monitor productivity, job performance, material yields, and overall project costs
- Plan and coordinate material procurement and delivery for efficient operations
- Train, mentor, and evaluate field personnel; support employee development and performance management
- Ensure all employees receive proper onboarding, safety training, and job orientation
- Maintain compliance with company policies, EEO standards, and safety regulations
- Collaborate with management, HR, and risk management teams
- Evaluate staffing, equipment, scheduling, and training needs; communicate recommendations to leadership
- Ensure all work complies with local laws, ordinances, and environmental (EPA) regulations
- Maintain strong relationships with inspectors, engineers, customers, and the public
- Oversee equipment inspections and coordinate maintenance and repairs
- Review and submit accurate daily reports and maintain detailed logs of job site activity
Qualifications
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong expertise in asphalt paving operations, materials, and techniques
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and grades
- Experience using precision measuring instruments and paving equipment
- Solid understanding of production methods and quality control
Experience
- 3–5 years of asphalt paving experience required
- Proven supervisory or leadership experience in field operations
- Experience working with complex layouts and strict project specifications
