What are the responsibilities and job description for the Structural Engineer position at Frazier Industrial Company?
Structural Engineer – Data Center
Position Summary
The Structural Engineer – Data Center Facilities is responsible for structural design and analysis supporting mission-critical data center projects. This role requires advanced knowledge of structural engineering principles applied to high-availability environments, including hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data centers.
The position involves independent engineering judgment in evaluating, selecting, and adapting structural systems that support critical infrastructure such as generators, UPS systems, cooling equipment, raised floor systems, cable tray supports, pipe racks, and related components. The engineer will prepare and modify drawings, specifications, and calculations while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, and company standards for safety, reliability, and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform structural analysis and design using governing codes and standards including AISC, IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISI, and ASTM.
- Design structural systems supporting mission-critical infrastructure, including:
- Generator platforms and fuel systems
- UPS and battery systems
- Cooling equipment (CRAH/CRAC units, chillers, cooling towers)
- Pipe racks, cable tray supports, and busway systems
- Raised access flooring and equipment anchorage
- Evaluate floor loading capacity for high-density server environments.
- Design seismic bracing and anchorage for structural and nonstructural components.
- Prepare structural calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Develop preliminary structural designs to support project proposals and capacity expansions.
- Research design alternatives to improve constructability, efficiency, and resilience.
- Review fabrication drawings and submittals for compliance.
- Coordinate with architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection disciplines.
- Participate in BIM coordination and multidisciplinary design reviews.
- Serve as Project Engineer and structural point of contact for clients.
- Conduct field investigations to verify existing conditions and support retrofit or expansion projects.
- Support fast-track schedules typical of data center construction.
- Coordinate with Project Management, Procurement, and Manufacturing to align design with installation sequencing and uptime constraints.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Structural emphasis required).
- 5–10 years of structural engineering experience.
- Experience supporting mission-critical facilities, industrial projects, or data centers preferred.
- Experience working in operational facilities or retrofit environments is a plus.
Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in RISA, SCIA, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar structural analysis software.
- Strong understanding of structural steel and anchorage design, including AISC Chapter C “Design for Stability.”
- Knowledge of seismic design and nonstructural component bracing requirements.
- Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams.
