What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Database Engineer position at Franklin Fitch?
Senior Database Engineer | Groton, MA (On-Site | $135,000 - $145,000 benefits
We’re partnering with a long‑established manufacturing business with more than a century of success. The company is continuing to grow, invest in technology, and modernise its data and analytics capabilities.
They’re looking for a Senior Database Engineer to take ownership of their SQL Server environment and play a key role in improving performance, scalability, and data delivery for reporting and analytics. This is a hands‑on role in a stable, people‑focused organisation where IT has real influence and visibility.
The culture is collaborative, practical, and family‑oriented rather than corporate.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll focus on analysing and optimising SQL Server performance across production systems, identifying and resolving bottlenecks related to queries, indexing, memory, IO, blocking, and deadlocks. Proactive monitoring, tuning, and performance optimisation will be a core part of your day‑to‑day work.
You’ll design and maintain effective indexing strategies, refactor and optimise stored procedures and legacy SQL code, and help establish SQL development and performance standards. The role also includes building and maintaining optimised data structures for reporting, working closely with reporting developers to support Power BI workloads, and improving query performance that directly impacts dashboards and analytics.
As the data platform evolves, you’ll contribute to hybrid SQL Server and cloud‑based architecture, including involvement with modern data platforms and Microsoft Fabric. You’ll support data movement, transformation, modelling, and integration efforts, act as the primary database partner for reporting and analytics teams, and troubleshoot production performance issues. Clear documentation and governance will be an important part of the role.
What they’re looking for
You’ll need 8 years of progressive experience with SQL Server or a similar enterprise RDBMS, with deep expertise in query optimisation, execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, and stored procedure design. Experience supporting reporting workloads and data pipelines is essential.
Experience with Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL, or modern analytics platforms is highly desirable, as is exposure to Python or data science workflows in a supporting capacity. Candidates who’ve worked closely with application teams or in industrial or operational environments will be particularly well suited.
Why apply?
The business offers long‑term stability, a strong focus on work‑life balance, and a genuinely supportive, family‑style culture. There’s consistent investment in learning and development, including certifications and upskilling, along with a strong commitment to community involvement. It’s an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on how data is used, optimised, and evolved within a growing organisation—without the pressures of a highly corporate environment.
