What are the responsibilities and job description for the PT Deputy Sheriff Court Bailiff position at Franklin County, VA?
GENERAL DEFINITION
Maintains order and performs responsible protective service work in the courts; provides custody of prisoners and order among those awaiting court proceedings.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
Work is performed under regular supervision of the chief corrections officer, sheriff, court or ranking personnel.
TYPICAL TASKS
- Opens and closes court sessions
- Maintains order in the courtroom and hallways, investigates risk potential of defendants and others;
- Provides escort, assistance and general welfare of jurors assigned to cases to be heard in court;
- Calls cases appearing before the court;
- Responds to all demands of the judges;
- Transportation and/or moving of prisoners as required;
- Insures that courtroom is searched and kept clean;
- Operates and maintains the public secured entrance to the courthouse;
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of court procedures; skill in the use of firearms; ability to exercise tact and judgment in handling visitors of the court, and in maintaining the behavior of prisoners; dependability; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, and some experience in law enforcement duties. Formal academy education a plus.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RELATED OBLIGATIONS
Possession of all requirements as prescribed by state regulations. Successfully complete and maintain all state mandated requirements offered through a criminal justice academy. The successful applicant will possess and maintain a valid Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Note: Applicant must have and maintain a driving record acceptable to Franklin County and its insurance carrier(s).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires the ability to spend a considerable amount of time in the courtroom, the security station and in maintaining all law enforcement objectives.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is a typical courthouse environment. The work involves an element of personal danger.
