GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

• Performs protective service work with an element of danger in the Sheriff’s Office involving a variety of general or support duty assignments; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Sergeant.

• This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects work requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and hazards.
• The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

• Performs all duties incumbent upon a deputy sheriff to include but not limited to public safety duties such as courtroom security, making arrests, providing care over and transportation of persons in custody to and from holding facilities; Serves civil and criminal process and a variety of other court papers;
• Operates metal detectors and x-ray machine;
• Executes temporary orders of detention and transports persons in custody to care facilities;
• Executes orders of eviction, writ of possessions, detainment or other court directed actions;
• Prepares detailed reports on activities and assignments;
• Contributes to the maintenance of Sheriff’s Office accreditation;
• Maintains liaison with judges, clerks, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other law enforcement agencies to ensure cooperation and protect all interests;
• Performs related tasks as required by command staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• General knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to courts and criminal justice; general knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Office; skill in the use of firearms, public safety equipment and motor vehicles; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Must meet all requirements as set forth in the Code of Virginia for deputy sheriffs.
