Position Summary
We are seeking a Registered Dietitian / Nutritionist for a 13-week travel contract with Peter Christensen Health Center, a tribal health facility serving the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in beautiful northern Wisconsin. The RD will counsel individuals and groups on nutritional practices to prevent and manage disease and promote good health across the lifespan, using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Nutrition Care Process and Model. Primary focus is the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) and WIC nutrition services. Extension available based on facility need.
Assignment Details
- Setting: Outpatient community health clinic (office and exam-room based)
- Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8-hour days, 40 hours/week
- Call: None
- Patient Population: Pediatric through geriatric; predominantly Native American community
- Contract Length: 13 weeks, with option to extend
- Start Date: ASAP – flexible based on credentialing timeline
Weekly Pay Package – $2,646 / week
- Taxable hourly wage: $35.00/hr × 40 hrs = $1,400.00
- Lodging per diem (max GSA): $110/day × 7 days = $770.00 (tax-free)
- M&IE per diem (max GSA): $68/day × 7 days = $476.00 (tax-free)
- TOTAL WEEKLY GROSS: $2,646.00
- Effective blended rate: $66.15/hr
- 13-week contract value: approximately $34,398
Tax-free per diem is available to clinicians maintaining a bona-fide tax home outside the assignment area, per IRS Accountable Plan rules. GSA per diem rates reflect FY 2026 standard CONUS for Vilas County, WI.

Key Responsibilities
- Counsel individuals and groups on nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve quality of life
- Conduct nutrition assessments, develop nutrition care plans, and document patient encounters in the facility's EHR; bill and post charges as able
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team on assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation
- Plan and schedule office appointments and home visits in coordination with appointment coordinators
- Maintain HIPAA-compliant patient confidentiality at all times
- Participate in mandatory facility trainings and quality improvement projects
- Perform other community/public health duties within scope of practice
Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI)
- Provide Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) to patients, families, and support persons on a 1:1 and group basis
- Develop and deliver diabetes education programming (curriculum, manuals, visual aids, course outlines)
- Collaborate with the Diabetes Program Coordinator on community educational events
- Collect and track data in accordance with SDPI and ADCES accreditation requirements
- Attend trainings pertaining to changes in the SDPI grant during the contract term
WIC – Competent Professional Authority (CPA)
- Provide high-quality, culturally competent, confidential WIC nutrition services
- Conduct WIC nutrition assessments and complete Nutrition Care Plans
- Provide family-centered nutrition and health counseling
- Assure food packages meet participant needs; educate participants on the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program
- Provide ongoing nutrition and breastfeeding support to WIC women
- Refer participants to additional nutrition, health, and social services as appropriate
Required Qualifications
- Registered Dietitian credential with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), active and in good standing
- Current Certified Dietitian (CD) license in the State of Wisconsin, or eligible to obtain prior to start (licensure assistance available)
- Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree from an ACEND-accredited Dietetic Program
- Minimum 2 years of clinical or community dietetics experience preferred
- BLS certification current at start of assignment
- Proficiency with electronic health records and Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES)
- Prior experience in Indian Health Services, tribal health, FQHC, or rural community health settings
- Prior WIC CPA experience or completion of WIC CPA training
Credentialing & Compliance Requirements
- Pre-employment drug screen and random testing during assignment
- Criminal background check applicable to the position
- Proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Hepatitis B, and Td/Tdap
- Current TB screening and N95 fit testing at start of assignment
- Adherence to all Policies and Procedures of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians
Native American Preference: Native American preference will be applied to this position as defined in Title 25, U.S. Code, Chapter 14, Subchapter V, subsections 273 & 274.
