Assistant Chief Engineer
Compensation: $60,000 – $65,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Assistant Chief Engineer supports the Chief Engineer in overseeing the daily operations of the Property Operations Department. This role assists in maintaining the physical integrity, safety, and efficiency of the property by supervising engineering staff, responding to guest and operational maintenance needs, coordinating preventative maintenance programs, and ensuring compliance with brand standards and safety regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responds to guest maintenance requests and resolves issues promptly and professionally.
- Assists the Chief Engineer in supervising daily Property Operations activities.
- Directs, supports, and monitors engineering staff to ensure quality workmanship and service standards.
- Participates in staff training, coaching, counseling, and performance documentation.
- Assists in scheduling staff according to business needs, skill level, and workload.
- Supports preventative maintenance programs and ensures timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Helps maintain records, logs, and documentation related to maintenance, repairs, and inspections.
- Assists in monitoring departmental expenses, budget adherence, and capital projects.
- Oversees inventory of engineering supplies, parts, and equipment; assists with purchase orders.
- Coordinates with outside contractors and vendors as directed.
- Acts as department lead in the absence of the Chief Engineer when required.
- Ensures proper use and operation of EMS systems, office equipment, and Life Safety Systems.
- Promotes a safe work environment and ensures compliance with OSHA and property safety standards.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responds to any reasonable task or request as assigned by the Chief Engineer, Planning Committee Member and Ownership.
ENVIRONMENT:
Works in all areas of the property, both inside and outside, including exposure to varying weather conditions. Must be able to work at heights (ladders, roofs, lifts) and in confined spaces. Requires physical mobility including lifting, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.
QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, & WORK EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Vocational or technical training preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years experience in hotel engineering or a related field.
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing blueprints.
- Ability to read wire and schematic diagrams.
- Ability to properly use hand tools, power tools, and electrical meters.
- Working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and Life Safety Systems.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and leadership skills.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES
Relevant trade certifications preferred.
- HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing certifications are a plus.
- Universal EPA Refrigerant Certification preferred (or ability to obtain).
- Any applicable state or local licenses related to building maintenance systems are a plus.
