Scale/Pad Yard Inspector

Job Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Scale/Pad Yard Inspector to join our team in Raleigh, NC. This position assists the Location/Scale Manager in ensuring accurate weights, proper material descriptions, and correct grading for all inbound and outbound loads. The Scale/Pad Yard Inspector will work under the direction of the Location/Scale Manager to process, sort, grade, and bale/box all materials. The role requires operation of ferrous and nonferrous scales, verification of scale tickets, and ensuring all documentation contains correct customer, material, and weight information (including gross and tare weights when applicable) with no manual inputs.

Additionally, the Pad Material Inspector is responsible for inspecting and evaluating all incoming material loads delivered to the shredder facility’s material pad at our Raleigh Metal Recycling Yard. This role ensures all materials meet quality and safety standards before processing in the shredder. The inspector will identify and segregate non-conforming materials and collaborate with the operations team to ensure efficient and safe processing of recyclable metals.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Location/Scale Manager in verifying correct weights, material descriptions, and grades for all inbound and outbound loads.
• Operate ferrous and nonferrous scales accurately and ensure all scale tickets are verified with correct customer, material, and weight information.
• Greet and direct customers to the appropriate location for their material deliveries.
• Inspect each incoming load dumped on the material pad for quality, composition, and compliance with facility standards.
• Identify and segregate non-metallic materials, hazardous items (e.g., batteries, gas tanks, radioactive materials), and non-ferrous metals requiring separate processing.
• Verify materials meet company specifications for shredding, including size, type, and cleanliness; reject or flag loads with prohibited items or excessive contaminants.
• Report any hazardous or non-compliant materials immediately to maintain safety compliance.
• Coordinate with scale operators, crane operators, and the Shredder Manager to manage material flow and resolve issues with incoming loads.
• Use handheld tools such as magnets or metal analyzers to identify material types.
• Maintain the material pad area in an organized, clean, and safe condition.
• Perform hands-on work using equipment to move heavier metals as needed.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Preferred two (2) years of experience in a scrap metal recycling environment.
• Ability to identify various metals and sort/unload metals according to Company Policy.
• Proven experience in quality inspection or a related field is a plus.
• Strong understanding of quality management systems and inspection processes.
• Familiarity with vision inspection systems and data collection methods is beneficial.
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to perform quality audits effectively.
• Knowledge of CGMP and FDA regulations is a plus but not required.
• Ability to operate handheld tools such as magnets and metal analyzers.
• Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.
• Physical ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, dust, rain).
