Position Summary

Foss Recycling Inc., North Carolina’s largest scrap metal recycler, is seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Operator) for our Halifax facility.

In this key administrative role, you will serve as the primary point of contact for all incoming and outgoing trucks. You’ll accurately weigh commercial vehicles and loads, record precise data for billing and inventory, and ensure full compliance with U.S. DOT regulations, North Carolina state weight laws, and company safety & environmental policies.

This position is essential for maintaining accurate records, smooth yard operations, and regulatory compliance in our high-volume recycling facility.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate the truck scale system to accurately weigh all inbound and outbound commercial vehicles and loads (ferrous & non-ferrous scrap metal, etc.)
• Greet drivers professionally, verify load details (material type, origin, driver information, vehicle registration), and issue scale tickets/receipts
• Accurately input weight data, material grades, and transaction details into computerized weighmaster software for inventory, billing, and reporting
• Calculate and process payments or transactions for non-account customers
• Direct trucks to appropriate unloading areas while maintaining safe and efficient traffic flow
• Perform daily scale inspections, zero-balance checks, and basic maintenance; report issues promptly to meet NC Weights & Measures standards
• Monitor and enforce compliance with North Carolina vehicle weight laws (NCGS § 20-118) and DOT regulations, including identifying potential overloads
• Screen incoming loads for prohibited materials (hazardous waste, radioactive items, etc.)
• Maintain accurate daily logs, reports, and records; assist with month-end inventory reconciliation
• Deliver excellent customer service while firmly enforcing facility rules
• Assist with light scalehouse housekeeping and minor yard duties as needed
• Fully comply with all company safety protocols, PPE requirements, and environmental regulations

DOT & State Law Compliance Duties

• Ensure all weighing activities meet legal-for-trade standards certified by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services
• Document gross, tare, and net weights accurately to support DOT-compliant recordkeeping
• Immediately report any safety or compliance concerns (improperly secured loads, weight violations, etc.) to supervision
• Stay up-to-date with changes in NC commercial vehicle weight limits and DOT requirements

Qualifications & Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required
• Previous experience as a scale operator, weighmaster, or in a recycling/landfill/shipping environment strongly preferred
• Familiarity with computerized weighing systems and data entry; quick learner of company-specific software
• Strong attention to detail and solid mathematical skills for accurate calculations and recordkeeping
• Excellent customer service and communication skills — professional interaction with drivers and the public
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and stand for extended periods
• Reliable, punctual, and available Monday–Friday (typically 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM) with occasional overtime
• Valid driver’s license required; clean driving record preferred
• Ability to pass background check and drug screening (including DOT-compliant testing if applicable)
• Knowledge of scrap metal recycling or heavy equipment is a plus
• Strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
• Primarily based in the scalehouse with exposure to outdoor elements, dust, and typical recycling yard noise
• Required to wear PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe boots, etc.) at all times in the yard
