Director of Accounting, Stamford, CT- Hybrid Schedule - $170-190K bonus
We are partnering on a Director of Accounting search with a growing, well-backed financial services platform in Stamford. While the business operates within insurance, they are intentionally open to talent coming from broader financial services backgrounds, including asset management, alternatives, banking, and other complex reporting environments. The focus is on technical strength, judgment, and the ability to operate independently, not a narrow industry box.
This role sits close to senior leadership and carries real ownership. It is a hands-on leadership position for someone who wants autonomy, visibility, and the ability to influence how the function scales.
Responsibilities:
- Own monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting across multiple entities
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis tied to business performance
- Partner directly with senior leadership on reporting, insights, and decision support
- Oversee audit process and manage relationships with external auditors
- Drive technical accounting conclusions across complex areas and evolving business lines
- Strengthen internal controls and improve reporting processes and workflows
- Mentor and develop a small team while remaining hands-on in execution
- Play a key role in systems and data optimization, particularly around reporting and analytics
Ideal profile:
- 7 years of experience in financial reporting or technical accounting within financial services
- CPA with a strong public accounting foundation (Big 4 or similar)
- Experience in complex reporting environments (multi-entity, regulatory, or specialized accounting frameworks)
- Ability to operate independently and make sound technical decisions without heavy oversight
- Systems orientation with experience in platforms such as NetSuite; exposure to Power BI or similar tools is a strong plus
- Leadership experience with a willingness to stay close to the work
- Insurance experience is helpful but not required
Extras:
- Open-minded on background; financial services experience translates well
- High level of autonomy with direct exposure to leadership
- Hybrid schedule based in Stamford
- Strong culture with a practical, no-politics environment
- Summer Fridays and a generous time-off policy
- Competitive compensation plus bonus
- 401(k) with company match
This is a strong fit for someone who has built technical credibility and is ready to step into a role where they can own the function, not just contribute to it.
