What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at FORT + HOME?
Grand Junction, CO (On-Site) · $125,000/year Health & Dental Insurance 3 Weeks Paid Vacation
Fort Home is a vertically integrated real estate organization reshaping housing across the Rocky Mountain region. From capital and lending, to development, to offsite modular construction, to brokerage and asset management, we deliver affordable, high-quality housing through a single integrated model. We are growing fast — and building a modern, technology-first finance function to scale with us.
We're hiring a hands-on Controller to own the accounting function across our five business pillars:
- Fort Home Capital — investment & private lending, including managed investment funds
- Fort Home Developments — construction & development / general contracting
- Fort Homes — offsite modular construction (our factory)
- Fort Home Realty — residential brokerage
- Fort Asset Management — property & asset management, including Hotel Melrose
The Controller owns the full accounting and financial-reporting function for every Fort Home entity — a multi-entity group spanning operating companies, development projects, and investment funds. You will run the monthly close, produce the financial statements leadership and our lenders rely on, and — just as importantly — modernize the foundation underneath: a clean chart of accounts, documented processes, and an AI-assisted, continuous-close accounting system.
This is a hands-on, on-site role in Grand Junction for a detail-driven, tech-forward accountant who wants to build, not just maintain. You'll report directly to the CEO and work alongside our NetSuite administrator, our external CPA firm (tax & audit), and fractional CFO support. It's a rare chance to shape the financial backbone of a fast-growing company — and grow with it.

- Manage multi-entity consolidation, intercompany transactions, and intercompany eliminations
- Prepare accurate, timely, GAAP-compliant financial statements

- Produce financial packages for banks and lenders, and support covenant reporting and financing requests

- Support fund accounting — investor capital accounts, contributions, and distributions
- Maintain the records and schedules that support investor reporting and annual K-1 and audit preparation with our external CPA
- Ensure adherence to GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements
- Coordinate tax, audit, and compliance matters with external accountants and legal counsel
Systems, Process & Automation
- Own and continuously improve accounting workflows, processes, and internal controls
- Operate fluently in NetSuite (our ERP); work across AppFolio Property Management & Investment Management, JobTread (construction job costing), Cloudbeds (hospitality), Tipalti (bill pay), Asana, and Google Suite
- Lead the rebuild of our NetSuite foundation and partner on AI-first automation that removes manual work
- Help stand up a continuous-close, always-bank-ready accounting operating system
Analysis & Leadership Support
- Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow management
- Deliver financial reporting, analysis, and recommendations that drive decisions
- Identify opportunities for efficiency, risk mitigation, and process improvement
Required

- Proficiency with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Gmail)
- Willingness to work on-site in Grand Junction, CO
Preferred
- 7 years of experience, including a Controller or Assistant Controller role
- NetSuite experience (strongly preferred)

- Experience with AppFolio (PM and/or IM), Asana, or similar platforms
- Comfort with AI tools and process automation
- Salary: $125,000 per year

- A high-impact, build-it role with a clear path to grow as the company scales
