We are a privately held, founder-led company with a collaborative culture, a strong connection to the outdoor industry, and a finance function that plays an important role in supporting smart growth, operational discipline, and long-term company health.
We are seeking a Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting function for Big Agnes and support accurate, timely, and useful financial information across the business. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys a hands-on accounting environment, understands inventory-based businesses, and can balance technical accounting discipline with the practical realities of a growing outdoor brand.
The Controller will report to the Director of Finance, who provides broader strategic finance leadership across Big Agnes’s U.S. and international operations, including budgeting, financial planning, cash strategy, banking relationships, ownership reporting, and oversight of Big Agnes International B.V. in the Netherlands. What You’ll Do
The Controller will own the core accounting function, including month-end close, general ledger accuracy, account reconciliations, accounting processes, inventory accounting support, financial statement preparation, audit and tax support, and supervision of accounting team members.
This role will serve as the accounting leader for the U.S. parent company and will support coordination with international operations, outside advisors, tax providers, auditors, and internal department leaders.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, including close calendar management, journal entry review, reconciliations, accruals, and financial statement preparation.
- Maintain accuracy and integrity of the general ledger, chart of accounts, accounting records, and supporting schedules.
- Oversee core accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, credit support, reconciliations, and accounting team workflows.
- Support inventory accounting, landed cost review, inventory valuation, COGS analysis, and related accounting processes in a seasonal, SKU-intensive consumer goods environment.
- Review balance sheet reconciliations and ensure reconciling items are researched, resolved, and documented timely.
- Partner with the Director of Finance on monthly financial review, budget-to-actual analysis, variance explanations, department reporting, and financial statement readiness.
- Support annual budgeting and forecasting through accurate accounting data, expense analysis, accrual review, and department-level reporting support.
- Assist with audit, tax, insurance, bank, compliance, and lender reporting requests by preparing accurate schedules and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate with outside tax advisors and compliance partners on sales tax, VAT/OSS support, income tax support, payroll-related items, and other required filings as needed.
- Support multi-entity accounting, intercompany activity, and coordination with Big Agnes International B.V. and related advisors.
- Help maintain accounting policies, internal controls, approval processes, and documentation standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve close timelines, NetSuite processes, reconciliations, reporting workflows, and accounting team efficiency.
- Manage, mentor, and support accounting team members, including setting expectations, reviewing work, providing training, and ensuring accountability.
- Serve as a key accounting partner to operations, sales, customer service, logistics, product, and leadership teams.
- Handle sensitive financial and employee information with professionalism, confidentiality, and care.
What You’ll Bring
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in consumer goods, wholesale, retail, outdoor, manufacturing, inventory-based, or multi-entity environments.
- Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accounting Manager, Accounting Manager, or similar accounting leadership role.

- Ability to communicate clearly with both finance and non-finance team members.
- Strong attention to detail, follow-through, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Practical, hands-on approach with the ability to improve processes without overcomplicating them.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
