Program Overview
Under the direction of the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL), the Consortium for Worker Education (CWE) will develop and implement a network of NYC workforce service providers offering job training, credentialing, and job placement services to approximately 2,400 young workers.
At least 75% of participants will be out-of-school, unemployed, or underemployed young adults residing in zip codes impacted by high rates of gun violence. This initiative treats gun violence as a public health crisis, combining short-term solutions with long-term, community-based intervention and prevention strategies. A key prevention strategy focuses on providing access to and readiness for meaningful career pathways.
Position Summary
The Workforce Instructor is responsible for facilitating a variety of training courses, including but not limited to:
- Food Protection License
- Retail Fundamentals
- Basic Computer Literacy
- First Aid/CPR
- Driver’s Education
- OSHA
The ideal candidate is passionate about empowering youth and supporting participants throughout both training and follow-up phases. This role requires the ability to understand participants’ challenges and translate them into engaging, practical, and supportive learning experiences.
The Workforce Instructor reports to the Career Services Director and collaborates closely with the Youth Workforce Team to achieve program deliverables.
Primary Responsibilities
- Facilitate engaging training sessions virtually and in person at QCH’s Jamaica and Pomonok locations.
- Coordinate National Retail Federation and NYC Food Protection courses, including lesson facilitation, exam preparation, attendance tracking, case management, and retention follow-up.
- Develop and enhance Workforce Readiness curriculum (resume writing, cover letters, goal setting, mock interviews, financial literacy, and soft skills).
- Model and teach appropriate workplace behavior and professional communication.
- Conduct participant orientations and open house sessions.
- Develop classroom materials, handouts, visual aids, and instructional manuals.
- Support participants in identifying career goals aligned with their interests and strengths.
- Recruit and coordinate guest speakers.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including case notes, data entry, and administrative reporting.
- Provide case management support during training and coordinate participant transitions with Case Managers.
- Evaluate training effectiveness and ensure practical application of learned skills.
- Assist with recruiting local businesses for internship and employment opportunities.
- Collaborate across Youth Workforce programs on curriculum development and facilitation.
- Provide coverage and perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or minimum of 2 years of training experience (preferred experience with high school or young adult populations).
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
- Maturity, integrity, and sound judgment.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and related applications.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
