Summary of Function
The Assistant Principal serves as a key member of the school’s leadership team, supporting the Principal in the overall administration, supervision, and operation of the high school, with a primary focus on student culture, behavior, and well-being. This role leads the development and implementation of systems that promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment, emphasizing positive student behavior, restorative practices, attendance, and student engagement.
The Assistant Principal collaborates with staff to ensure consistent implementation of behavioral expectations, student supports, and intervention systems, including multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). This position works closely with students, families, and staff to address student needs, foster strong relationships, and ensure equitable access to a positive school experience.
In partnership with the Principal, the Assistant Principal helps drive school-wide priorities, ensures accountability, and may assume responsibilities aligned to the Principal’s scope of work as delegated. The Assistant Principal serves as the acting site leader in the absence of the Principal and reports directly to the Principal.
Qualifications
Qualifications include:
Valid AZ Department of Education Administrative Certificate required
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university required
Emphasis in supervision, educational administration and secondary curriculum preferred
AZ Department of Education Certification required; Dual Certification preferred
Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement, English as a Second Language (ESL) or Bilingual endorsement is required within one year of hire
Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Three (3) years successful experience in teaching, administration and supervision of staff preferred
Bilingual preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of district and school student-achievement data and AZ State Standards.
Knowledge of Restorative Practice and coordination of discipline.
Ability to manage a variety of student behaviors.
Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific Duties
Position would focus/oversee district and school level programs housed at the High School with an emphasis in:
Attendance
Discipline
Teacher observations and evaluations
Staff observations and evaluations
Implementation and oversight of student support systems, including MTSS
School safety, climate, and student well-being
Illustrative Duties
Enforces district policy with respect to attendance and discipline for students in grades 9-12. This includes the coordination of the Responsible Thinking Program and participation in student disciplinary hearings.
Leads and implements a comprehensive student behavior framework that emphasizes prevention, restorative practices, and progressive discipline.
Monitors and analyzes attendance, behavior, and student data to develop and implement targeted interventions and supports.
Oversees and supports Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for behavior and attendance, collaborating with counselors, teachers, and support staff to ensure student success.
Evaluates and supervises assigned certified and classified staff in alignment with district evaluation systems (approximately one third of the faculty).
Conducts classroom observations and provides feedback to support instructional improvement and effective classroom management practices.
Assists in the supervision of after-school activities, athletics, and campus events to ensure safety, engagement, and appropriate student conduct.
Coordinates the various committees including the Anti-Bullying Committee, Attendance and Discipline Committee, Accreditation Committee and others as needed.
Serves as the school liaison with state and national testing agencies.
Attends student support meetings, including Student Study Teams, 504 meetings, and IEP meetings, as appropriate.
Assists in providing leadership for the overall instructional program including selection and support of instructional staff
Works collaboratively with all staff to strengthen the instructional program.
Maintains a visible presence on campus to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
Establishes effective communication and maintains positive and respectful relationships with students, staff, parents and the community
Participates in the recruitment, selection and supervision of all school building personnel.
Assists with principal in providing the staff with professional development that will enhance their teaching skills to meet the needs of a culturally diverse student populations and a variety of learning styles.
Supervises the safety and well-being of all students.
Participates in school disaster preparedness and safety information programs.
Assists in developing and implementing a school improvement plan
Serves with parent, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
Performs other tasks and assume responsibilities as the principal may assign.
Collaborates with principal in the creation of the master schedule and oversees the registration process.
Perform other job related duties as assigned.
Working conditions
Required to work some nights and weekends. Required to work in both indoor and outdoor environments with varied temperatures and notice levels. Required to manage high to moderate levels of stress. Required to work in a standard office and school conditions.
Physical requirements
Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion and movement is required to perform aspects of the job. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves sitting and moving for extended periods of time, requires moving from one location to another, reaching, bending, holding and grasping objects. Verbal communication ability required.
Equipment, Aids, Tools and Materials
Uses office equipment which includes but is not limited to: computers, video projectors, white boards, and office or instructional equipment. FUSD recognizes that ever changing development of technology but expects all staff to keep abreast of changing technology opportunities and use tools and devices provided to them.
