Director of Music and Worship

First Baptist Church of Silver Spring MD is recruiting for a part-time Director of Music and Worship. The successful candidate must be proficient in playing either the piano or organ and conducting from the keyboard. We are rebuilding our music program and the Dir. of Music will have a key role in recruiting and engaging children, youth, and adults to use both vocal and instrumental talents in the worship services.

THE CHURCH

The First Baptist Church of Silver Spring Maryland (FBC) is a small urban church with a culturally and ethnically diverse congregation. Average attendance for Sunday worship service is 75. Our motto is Sharing God's love in the Heart of the City. In addition to FBC our facility also houses a Spanish congregation, Iglesia Bautista de Emanuel, and a Haitian congregation, Eglise Babtist de la Foi, with whom we work closely. All congregations hold Sunday morning services at the same time which allow children from all three congregations to attend a joint Sunday school program.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. In collaboration with the Pastor, select appropriate hymns and anthems for the Sunday service that support the scriptures and sermon topic . Likewise, collaborate with the Pastor in worship planning for special services such as Maundy Thursday and Christmas Eve.

2. Communicate with the church Office Manager regarding the order of worship, hymns and special music for inclusion in the bulletin, church calendar and newsletter.

3. Play the piano and/or organ for the worship service including the prelude, postlude, hymns, anthem, doxology and other music as appropriate. Conduct the Music Ensemble while accompanying them for the anthem.

4. Plan and conduct weekly rehearsals for the Music Ensemble.

5. Provide leadership, encouragement and development of congregational singing.

6. Seek ways to expand the music ministry by recruiting new singers, encouraging individuals to share their instrumental or other musical talents, and working with our children and youth.

7. Maintain the music library. Select new material for purchase.

8. Oversee the maintenance of musical instruments (piano, organ).

9. Develop and coordinate budgets for the worship and music functions.

10. Coordinate with the Spanish and Haitian churches as well as Montgomery Hills Baptist Church in planning joint musical presentations.

11. Attend Church Council meetings upon request.

QUALIFICATIONS

• A deep Christian faith and desire to minister to the congregation through music.
• Demonstrated skill in leading a choir, programming music and designing worship services.
• Proficiency in playing piano and/or organ with the ability to lead vocally while playing.
• Has the ability to relate well and work with members of a culturally and ethnically diverse congregation.
• Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree in music desired.
• Must pass background and security checks.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position is under the supervision of the Pastor.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a part-time (20 hours per week), professional staff position. Starting salary is negotiable depending upon experience.
