About The Role

Raytheon is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join its Mechanical Engineering group within the Shipboard Effectors Department. This onsite position located in Tucson, AZ, offers an exciting opportunity to work on the design and upgrade of sophisticated shipboard effectors and subsystems for military applications. The role involves collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to develop innovative mechanical hardware solutions, supporting all phases of program lifecycle from concept development to production. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in designing ruggedized structures, interconnects, cooling systems, and electronics integration, ensuring the products meet stringent military standards and performance requirements. This position requires a proactive individual capable of working independently, leading small teams, and interacting with senior personnel and external customers on significant technical matters. The engineer will also contribute to proposal development, cost and schedule management, and transition-to-production activities, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, reliable products that enhance national security.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree with at least 5 years of experience. Extensive experience in designing electronics packaging for military, aerospace, or commercial applications is required. Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerances (GD&T) and a solid understanding of military standards and design for manufacturability are essential. U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance, including an interim clearance prior to start, are mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate strong technical aptitude, excellent communication skills, and experience with 3D modeling software such as CREO (Pro/E) or similar. Experience with structural analysis techniques and familiarity with ANSI drawing standards are preferred. Additionally, candidates should have a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes related to CCAs, mechanical/RF components, and electronics assemblies.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize extensive mechanical hardware design experience to develop ruggedized structures, interconnects, cooling systems, and electronics integration solutions.
  • Support all phases of program development, including capture, concept development, design, manufacturing, integration, and testing.
  • Define mechanical outlines, construction details, component specifications, and develop mechanical and electrical layout drawings, culminating in comprehensive technical data packages.
  • Lead transition-to-production efforts, ensuring smooth release of designs into manufacturing while maintaining quality and performance standards.
  • Track project progress against cost, schedule, quality, and performance metrics, employing Earned Value Management and Estimate at Complete (EAC) methodologies.
  • Contribute to proposal development by providing technical inputs and supporting business development activities.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and customer requirements by providing technical oversight and troubleshooting during product development.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, exercising technical judgment to meet project goals and deadlines.
  • Lead small teams of mechanical engineers when necessary, fostering collaboration and technical excellence.
  • Engage regularly with senior management and external stakeholders to coordinate technical efforts and resolve complex engineering challenges.

Benefits
