About The Role
Northrop Grumman's Defense Systems division is seeking a highly skilled FPGA Digital Design Engineer 3 to join our Digital Technologies Organization. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development, enhancement, and maintenance of FPGA designs for advanced defense products and systems. As part of our enterprise-wide digital transformation, you will work on complex high-speed digital designs, supporting the full product lifecycle from concept to deployment. The position involves collaborating closely with systems engineering teams to ensure that digital hardware architectures and algorithms meet stringent system requirements. You will utilize your expertise in digital signal processing and interfaces to develop innovative solutions that enhance our defense capabilities. The role is based in Northridge, CA, with on-site work on a 9/80 schedule, and may involve travel up to 10%. Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related STEM discipline, with a minimum of five years of digital verification engineering experience using industry-standard simulation tools. Candidates with a master’s degree should have at least three years of relevant experience. Hands-on FPGA design experience with VHDL and/or Verilog within the past three years is essential. Proficiency with AMD/Xilinx and/or Intel/Altera SoC FPGAs is required, along with experience using Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools such as Vivado, Quartus, and QuestaSim. An active DoD Secret Clearance is mandatory to start in this role. Additional qualifications include strong knowledge of digital signal processing, digital interfaces, and experience with high-speed FPGA implementation, including AXI, DMA, and Ethernet protocols.
Responsibilities
The FPGA Digital Design Engineer 3 will be responsible for researching, designing, and developing complex high-speed digital hardware. Key responsibilities include supporting the implementation of digital FPGA hardware architecture and algorithms, ensuring design meets system-level requirements through collaboration with Systems Engineering, and reviewing designs and analyses for quality and performance. The engineer will develop test benches, support formal VHDL verification, and assist in debugging FPGA applications using tools such as Altera Signal Tap or Xilinx ILA. Additional duties involve creating and optimizing FPGA physical constraints, achieving timing closure, and supporting system-level debug using test equipment like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. The role also involves participating in the full product lifecycle, from initial design through validation and production, ensuring that digital hardware solutions align with project goals and customer needs.
Benefits
