What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operations Manager position at FedEx Ground?
Are you a highly driven, hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment? We are a top-performing, independently contracted service provider for FedEx Ground seeking an Operations Manager to take full ownership of our daily route operations and driver team. This is not just a desk job; it is a critical role responsible for safety, service, and efficiency. You will be the engine that ensures every package gets delivered on time.
Key Responsibilities: The Core of the Job

- Driver Management & Leadership: Directly supervise, coach, and motivate a team of route drivers. Conduct regular performance reviews, training, and enforce safety protocols.
- Route Optimization: Oversee the daily dispatch, route planning, and execution. Utilize routing software (e.g., DRO) to maximize efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure all P&D (Pick-up and Delivery) routes are covered.
- Safety & Compliance: Champion a "Safety Above All" culture. Ensure strict adherence to DOT regulations, vehicle inspection (Pre/Post-trip), and FedEx service standards.
- Operational Control: Monitor daily service metrics, track driver accountability, handle real-time delivery issues, and communicate effectively with FedEx Ground staff.
- Fleet Management: Coordinate and schedule maintenance, repairs, and preventative care for all fleet vehicles to minimize downtime.
- Administrative Duties: Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training of new hires. Manage and report daily timesheets for payroll accuracy.
What You Bring to the Team (Competencies)
- Experience: 2-5 years of management or supervisory experience, preferably within logistics, transportation, or route-based service. Prior FedEx, UPS, or Amazon delivery experience is a major plus.
- Technical Skills: Experience with route optimization software (DRO knowledge is highly preferred) and strong proficiency in MS Excel/data analysis.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead, mentor, and hold a diverse team accountable in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment.
- Problem-Solving: Strong bias for action and the ability to make rapid, informed decisions to resolve unexpected operational challenges.
- Requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age or older (for insurance purposes).
- Must be willing to submit to a background check, drug test, and DOT physical.
- Valid Driver's License; ability to drive a P-1000 sized step van as needed.
- Schedule: Must be available to work early mornings (starts usually between 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM) and available for at least one weekend day (Saturday and/or Sunday) as routes require.
Why Join Our Team?
- Stability and Growth: Be a core leader for a high-volume contractor with established routes and a track record of growth.
- Competitive Compensation: Excellent base salary coupled with performance bonuses tied directly to operational success and safety goals.
