What You’ll Do
As a Fiber Optics Technician, you’ll be responsible for the installation, testing, splicing, and maintenance of buried and aerial fiber optic cable systems. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Installing, modifying, and troubleshooting fiber optic communication cables.
- Performing fusion splicing and testing using Fujikura 90S , power meters, and other specialized tools.
- Conducting daily field inspections of existing and under-construction fiber plant infrastructure.
- Identifying and documenting discrepancies in the outside plant.
- Submitting red-line as-builts and documentation to the engineering department.
- Planning and documenting step-by-step procedures for fiber projects.
- Maintaining detailed logs and records of fiber optics work.
- Collaborating with internal departments, contractors, and utility agencies to ensure project success.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong understanding of safety rules, telecommunications principles, and electronics.
- Proficiency in fiber optic troubleshooting, splicing, and testing techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
- Skilled in using diagnostic tools such as optical wave reflection meters, waveform generators, and logic analyzers.
- Strong computer skills and attention to detail in maintaining records and documentation.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and under varying environmental conditions.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Choose one of the following:
- Option A: Associate degree or certification in engineering, electronics, mechanical, computer, or telecommunications technology, plus 4 years of hands-on experience (including 2 years in outside plant fieldwork).
- Option B: High school diploma or equivalent, plus 6 years of relevant experience as defined above.
- Option C: An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Must obtain fusion splicing certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Must be able to distinguish colors in fiber tubes and cables.
- Siecor X77 fusion splicer, OTDR, power meter and light source, computers, communication devices, and other fiber optic testing and installation tools.
- Ability to perform essential job functions, including working in confined areas, lifting equipment, and working in various weather conditions.
- Exposure to electrical current, dust, confined spaces, and environmental conditions typical of fiber optic fieldwork.
- As required by the PWC Safety Manual.
