The Emergency Medicine Nurse Practitioner (NP) functioning in a sole provider role is responsible for
delivering comprehensive emergency care in a hospital setting. This role requires independent clinical
decision-making, rapid assessment, and management of a wide range of acute and emergent conditions
across the lifespan. The NP will serve as the primary and often only on-site provider, collaborating remotely with physicians or specialists as needed. This position demands strong clinical acumen, procedural competency, and the ability to manage patient care efficiently in a resource-limited environment while ensuring high standards of safety, quality, and compassion.
• Perform comprehensive assessments of patients presenting with acute, urgent, and emergent conditions.
• Function independently as the sole on-site provider.
• Triage and prioritize patient care based on acuity and available resources.
• Make rapid, evidence-based decisions in high-pressure situations with limited supervision.
• Diagnose and manage a wide range of medical, traumatic, and behavioral health emergencies across the
lifespan.
• Order, interpret, and act upon diagnostic tests including laboratory studies, radiographs, and EKGs.
• Initiate and manage treatment plans, including prescribing medications and administering therapies.
• Perform emergency procedures such as:
o Laceration repair (suturing, stapling)
o Incision and drainage
o Splinting and casting
o Foreign body removal
o Basic airway management and resuscitation
• Stabilize critically ill or injured patients and coordinate transfer to higher levels of care when necessary.
• Consult with off-site physicians, specialists, or telemedicine services as needed.
• Communicate effectively with nursing staff, EMS personnel, and ancillary departments.
• Provide clear and compassionate education to patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, and
follow-up care.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and professional standards of care.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and peer reviews.
• Assist in maintaining efficient patient flow and department operations.
• Participate in emergency preparedness and disaster response efforts.
• Support onboarding and mentoring of new staff
Education: Required: Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Licenses/Certification: Required: Acute Care or Family Nurse Practitioner, APRN License, ACLS, PALS, ATLS
Preferred: ENP (Emergency Nurse Practitioner) Certification
Experience: Preferred: 3 years of experience in an ED Provider role.
