Job Title: Health Unit Clerk
Department: Medical-Surgical
Reports To: Acute Nurse Manager
Schedule: 36-40 Hours a week. Weekends and Holidays Possible
Pay Range: $15.81- $19.66 (Pay depending on experience)
The Health Unit Clerk provides vital clerical and administrative support to the nursing team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. This role involves direct communication with patients, families, and clinical staff and requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and compassion.
The Health Unit Clerk works under the direction of licensed nurses and in accordance with the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, and unit-specific standards of care.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative & Clerical Support

Perform clerical and front-desk duties including answering phones, responding to EMS radio calls, and directing inquiries with professionalism.

Accurately transcribe and file physician orders into patient charts.

Organize and maintain medical records, admission packets, and discharge paperwork.

Manage patient documentation in compliance with hospital standards and HIPAA regulations.
Patient Interaction & Care Coordination

Answer patient call lights promptly and communicate needs to nursing staff.

Assist nursing aides in delivering meals and ensuring patient comfort.

Arrange and, when needed, accompany patients to off-site medical appointments or therapy sessions.

Sort and deliver patient mail and personal items with discretion and courtesy.
Operational Support & Safety

Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.

Monitor and report any equipment issues, safety concerns, or environmental hazards immediately.

Demonstrate sound judgment in responding to emergencies and changes in patient status.

Support smooth patient admissions, transfers, and discharges in collaboration with the nursing team.
Teamwork & Professional Development

Collaborate with nursing staff and other departments to foster a positive, team-oriented work environment.

Exhibit professionalism through reliability, attendance, and adaptability to changing workloads.

Complete required annual education, competencies, and certifications.

Participate in orientation and training of new staff members when needed.
Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Certifications:

Must obtain CNA certification within one (1) year of hire.

Must obtain BLS (Basic Life Support) certification within six (6) months of hire.

Experience: Previous clerical, medical office, or healthcare experience preferred.

Skills:

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Proficiency in computer systems, EMR/EHR data entry, and office software.
