Fairview is looking for a Blood Bank Technical Specialist at M Health Fairview St. John's Hospital in Maplewood, MN. This is a 1.0 FTE, 80hours/2 week pay period position on the day shift, 06:00am-2:30 pm with occasional weekends as needed.
The St. John's Laboratory cares for a hospital of over 184 beds. We see all patients from pediatrics to geriatrics. Our service lines include Obstetrics, Emergency Medicine, Oncology, Cardiac Care, and general surgery. Our Laboratory offers a robust generalist experience for prospective employees.
The Technical Specialist of Blood Bank has direct responsibilities for the technical operations of a laboratory or laboratory section. This includes acting as a technical resource, performing a wide variety of complex diagnostic procedures, and directing workflow to ensure the accurate, efficient, and most cost-effective provision of testing. This position is also a primary resource for compliance, regulatory, and quality assurance activities.
Job Expectations:
- Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of assigned laboratory(s)/section(s) and participates in planning and financial management as appropriate.
- Performs a wide variety of complex diagnostic procedures including waived, moderate, or high complexity testing as defined by CLIA ’88.
- Directs workflow in the daily operations of a laboratory section and is a technical resource for staff in problem-solving and in the evaluation of testing results for accuracy, determining when recheck or other intervention is needed. This may include directly communicating results to providers to investigate and resolve incongruent results.
- Partners with key stakeholders to ensure appropriate quality and performance measures are in place to meet any policy, compliance, or regulatory requirements.
- Coordinates the preparation of the lab section for inspection by accrediting agencies.
- Orients individuals in laboratory operations including routine and complex testing methodology, instrumentation and information systems, documenting progress, developing learning plans, and providing feedback to both employee and leader.
- Acts as a resource for laboratory information systems functions coordinating change and implementation requests as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required
Education
- Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes meeting qualifications as specified in CLIA ’88.
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology an accredited institution (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided); -OR-
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry (Transcript must be provided); -OR-
- A transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university (Equivalency verification documentation must be provided); -OR-
- Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course and a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry (Transcript must be provided); -OR-
- Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biology, cytology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, allied health, medical laboratory science, or an appropriately related field (Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided
Experience
- Candidates with baccalaureate or higher degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology must have 1 year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing; -OR-
- Candidates qualifying by baccalaureate degree and semester hours must have 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.
License/Certification/Registration
- Applicant must possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification (ASCP or ASCPi - BB or SBB). If not certified at time of hire, must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
