Job Purpose
The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing advanced accounting functions, ensuring accuracy and integrity of financial data, and supporting period end close, tax reporting, fixed asset management, and compliance activities. This role oversees complex reconciliations, reviews journal entries, and supports financial operations across multiple entities. The Senior Accountant serves as a key resource to the Finance team and provides backup support to Accounts Payable and expense processing functions.
This role serves as a subject-matter resource for junior finance team members, providing oversight and coaching while maintaining strong attention to detail and the ability to challenge inaccuracies or incomplete information.
Primary Responsibilities:
General Ledger & Period-End Close
- Review and release journal entries for accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
- Prepare and maintain recurring journal entries.
- Prepare and book fixed asset transactions, asset capitalization, and periodic depreciation and amortization.
- Book, monitor, and reconcile prepaid expenses.
- Prepare and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring timely resolution of variances.
- Create and update general ledger reports in Acumatica to support financial reporting and analysis.
Tax Reporting & Compliance
- Review sales & use tax, B&O tax, and CAT returns, ensuring timely submission and accuracy.
- Prepare and submit personal property tax filings.
- Oversee and direct the corporate income tax reporting process, including reviewing estimates and payments, and ensuring appropriate correspondence with tax authorities is maintained.
Lease Accounting & Fixed Assets
- Maintain ASC 842 lease schedules in LeaseQuery, including deferred rent, modifications, and period end postings.
- Ensure compliance with lease accounting standards through accurate tracking and reporting.
- Monitor and ensure correct reporting of tenant allowances.
Financial Analysis & Reporting
- Analyze financial statements and identify trends, variances, or unusual activity for management review.
- Conduct technical accounting research and apply U.S. GAAP guidance to complex transactions, ensuring accurate and compliant financial reporting.
- Prepare the quarterly self-funded insurance expenses spreadsheet with accuracy and attention to detail.
Accounts Payable & Expense Processing Support
- Serve as backup to review and release AP transactions.
- Backup oversight of the expense import program: review transactions, identify errors or reversals, and ensure accurate processing.
Cross-Functional Support
- Monitor the Finance inbox and respond to inquiries, including supplier setups, credit applications, and banking information requests.
- Serve as back up for daily banking processes.
- Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and external partners to resolve issues and ensure timely financial processing.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
- CPA or working toward CPA certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a multi-entity environment.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
- Proficiency with ERP systems; experience with Acumatica is a plus.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with lease and tax software (e.g., LeaseQuery).
- Strong analytical skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage deadlines, prioritize work, and handle confidential information.
- Ability to mentor and develop junior team members through clear, constructive, and collaborative feedback.
- Experience in AEC industry preferred.
- Prior experience preparing tax filings and compliance reports preferred.
