Director of Technical Accounting

A well established organization is seeking a Director of Technical Accounting to serve as its technical accounting leader. This position will oversee the interpretation and application of U.S. GAAP, research and document complex transactions, manage the adoption of new accounting standards, and support accurate and timely financial reporting.

The Director will serve as a strategic partner to senior accounting leadership while supporting internal controls, audit readiness, accounting systems, process optimization, and long term transformation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the organization’s subject matter expert on technical accounting matters, including fair value, variable interest entities, revenue recognition, equity and share based compensation, business combinations, consolidations, leases, impairments, and debt and equity transactions.
• Lead the interpretation, adoption, and implementation of new and evolving U.S. GAAP standards.
• Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and technical guidance.
• Research complex or non routine transactions and prepare clear, well supported accounting memoranda.
• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close and reporting cycles.
• Oversee internal financial reporting, executive close reporting, and applicable regulatory reporting.
• Partner with executive accounting leadership to assess the accounting implications of strategic initiatives, transactions, and organizational changes.
• Serve as a liaison with external auditors and internal SOX and controls teams.
• Collaborate with Accounting Systems, IT, and Accounting Operations to improve and automate close, reconciliation, and reporting processes.
• Identify opportunities to reduce manual processes, strengthen data integrity, and improve scalability.
• Translate complex accounting requirements into practical and sustainable operational processes.
• Support long term accounting transformation and organizational growth.
• Maintain compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, internal governance, and professional ethics.
• Perform additional accounting projects and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• CPA strongly preferred.
• At least 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including significant technical accounting and audit exposure.
• Advanced knowledge of U.S. GAAP.
• Experience supporting audits, internal controls, financial reporting, and complex accounting transactions.
• Strong research, documentation, communication, and cross-functional leadership skills.
• Ability to work a hybrid schedule based in Irvine, California.
