Position Overview
We are seeking a diligent Family Law Associate to join our firm and manage a diverse caseload of family law matters. The successful candidate will handle client representation in litigation and alternative dispute resolution, provide strategic legal counsel, draft pleadings and agreements, conduct legal research, and coordinate with experts to achieve favorable outcomes. This role requires strong courtroom advocacy and negotiation skills, excellent client communication, and proficiency with efiling and legal research tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a varied caseload of family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support/alimony, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and marital/property division.
  • Prepare, file, and respond to pleadings, motions, discovery requests, subpoenas, and other court documents; maintain docketing and case calendars.
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, briefs, orders, settlement agreements, parenting plans, and other legal documents using Westlaw, LexisNexis, and firm document management systems.
  • Represent clients in hearings, mediations, settlement negotiations, custody evaluations, depositions, and trial proceedings; provide courtroom advocacy and motion practice.
  • Coordinate with expert witnesses, forensic accountants, and valuation professionals for complex asset division and financial disclosure matters.
  • Handle domestic violence, protection/restraining order proceedings, juvenile/dependency matters, adoption, and guardianship cases as needed.
  • Lead or participate in alternative dispute resolution processes, collaborative law matters, and trial preparation, including witness preparation and evidence organization.
  • Manage client relationships with clear communication, counseling on legal options, and timely status updates; maintain client confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Oversee case management tasks including efiling/CM/ECF, document management, docketing, and timely responses to court deadlines.
  • Participate in firm business development, client intake, and mentorship of junior staff and paralegals.
  • Assist with settlement negotiations and trial strategy, including preparation of exhibits, witness lists, and demonstrative evidence.
  • Monitor developments in family law statutes, case law, and local court rules to inform case strategy and client advice.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and admission to the state bar in good standing.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of substantive family law experience preferred; candidates with strong litigation and case management experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Family Law matters (required): divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support/alimony, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and marital property/asset division.
  • Experience with trial litigation, courtroom advocacy, motion practice, depositions, and trial preparation.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills with experience using Westlaw and LexisNexis.
  • Familiarity with efiling/CM/ECF systems, document management platforms, docketing, and case management software.
  • Experience coordinating with expert witnesses, forensic accounting, and property valuation professionals for complex financial cases (nice to have).
  • Ability to conduct negotiations, mediations, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR); mediation or collaborative law training is a plus.
  • Experience handling domestic violence/protection orders, custody evaluations, parenting plans, juvenile/dependency matters, adoption, and guardianship matters (nice to have).
  • Excellent client counseling, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to manage sensitive and high-conflict situations professionally.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage a heavy caseload and meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to draft pleadings, settlement agreements, parenting plans, and other legal documents with clarity and accuracy.
  • Comfortable coordinating subpoenas, discovery, depositions, and expert witness testimony; experience with forensic accounting and property valuation preferred.
  • Commitment to professional ethics, continuous learning, and contributing positively to firm culture; ability to mentor junior attorneys and paralegals.
