Job Summary


Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is hiring a Theatre Residential Faculty. This position will teach courses each academic year in areas such as scenic design, technical theatre, acting, directing, and related areas aligned with the candidate's expertise; facilitate student productions and work with students outside of the classroom on instructional activities, projects, and productions; plays a key role in developing, growing and providing leadership within the theatre and production program.


This position will begin in August 2026.

Essential Functions


Instruction

Teach a variety of in-person and hybrid theatre and production classes to majors and non-majors, such as scenic design, technical theatre, makeup, safety, acting, directing, and related areas aligned with the candidate's expertise.

Engage students with various backgrounds and learning needs through varied, meaningful, and student-centered teaching methods that promote critical thinking.

Use a variety of assessment methods and learning outcomes to evaluate knowledge of subject matter and monitor student progress through the timely preparation and grading of student work.

Maintain consistent office hours to support student success and provide guidance aligned with individual academic goals.

Program Leadership & Development

  • Play a key role in developing the theatre and production programs;
  • Provide leadership for theatre programs and activities;
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with high school and university institutions to build and promote transfer pathways for students.
  • Cultivate relationships with the local community, business, and industry to identify new programs and work skills, and develop internship and practical application experiences.
  • Serve as Production Manager, coordinating the logistical and administrative duties of the student productions.
  • Collaborate with the Performing Arts Center, Outreach and Advising, Student Life, and other departments, faculty, and staff as appropriate
  • Serve as college representative on college and district committees, such as the Theatre Instructional Council and community advisory boards.


Course Development

Design and develop course materials, curricula, and syllabi that support student growth and continuous improvement.

Incorporate feedback and innovative, current practices to ensure course content aligns with students' needs, interests, and goals, promoting equitable access to educational success.

  • Evolve curriculum and programs to align with evolving industry, student, and community needs.
  • Continuously improve curriculum and programs to provide students with experiential learning opportunities and practical applications.


Faculty Professional Service

  • Work collaboratively with division members and with other college employees to improve student learning.

Serves on college and/or district committees to advance EMCC’s mission as an educational and cultural center for the community at large.

Contributes to an environment that fosters a sense of belonging for all students, faculty, and staff.

Professional Development

Engages in ongoing professional development to remain current in subject knowledge and pedagogical practices, upholding the college's high standards for excellence, innovation, and integrity.

Participates in relevant training and workshops, demonstrating accountability and ethical principles to benefit students and the college community.

Campus Presence

  • Engages in the academic life of the college as reflected in the Residential Faculty Agreement and College Plan.

Actively participates in campus and district events, fostering a supportive, engaging campus climate that emphasizes the well-being and potential of all students, faculty, staff, and community at large.

Oversees the student productions, which will require work on evenings and weekends for rehearsals and performances.


Minimum Qualifications


A graduate degree is required. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:

  • Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field

OR

  • Master’s degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credit hours

Desired Qualifications

  • MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in scenic design, lighting design, costume design, sound design, performance, directing, and/or other technical areas
  • Experience teaching theatre and production courses at a community college or university or within a theatre environment for two or more years
  • Professional or college theatre production management or other theatre management experience
  • Demonstrated familiarity with theatrical technologies, theatrical lighting and/or sound systems, and a commitment to safety protocols
  • Experience building, developing, and maintaining a theatre program
  • Evidence of research or professional activity in the candidate’s specialty (i.e., a record of publication, presentation, and/or performance)
  • Experience collaborating within and across areas in an educational or professional environment to improve and maintain engagement and success

Special Working Conditions


May be required to work evenings and weekends for theatre rehearsals and performances
May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
