About the Role
As a Firmware Engineer, you will work as part of a high-performance engineering team to design, develop, and test high-reliability embedded firmware for military and industrial power electronics products. You will collaborate closely with power electronics engineers, hardware designers, and systems engineers to ensure firmware meets strict military specifications and customer requirements.
This role blends embedded software development with hands-on hardware interaction, supporting products from concept through production and qualification testing.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for microprocessor-controlled power electronics products
- Develop firmware using C/C on Texas Instruments C2000 microcontrollers or similar TI devices
- Utilize Code Composer Studio, Eclipse IDE, or similar development environments
- Implement and maintain real-time operating systems (RTOS) where required
- Design and implement J1939 CAN communication buses on embedded systems
- Develop PC-based GUIs for CAN communication testing and diagnostics
- Utilize CAN tools such as PCAN-Basic, PCAN-Explorer, VECTOR tools, and GUI development tools like Microsoft Visual Studio
- Support FPGA development using Microchip/Microsemi/Actel Libero, including VHDL programming (preferred)
- Design and program user interfaces using Red Lion Crimson 3.1 HMI IDE (preferred)
- Use oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and other lab equipment to troubleshoot firmware-hardware interactions
- Interpret and work from hardware schematics and electrical designs
- Perform firmware and hardware debugging to identify root causes and implement corrective actions
- Support microcontroller and FPGA circuit card design efforts (preferred)
- Work from customer specifications to define proper firmware behavior and system operation
- Collaborate cross-functionally with power electronics engineers to ensure system-level performance
- Participate in design reviews, verification testing, and customer technical discussions
- Support products through qualification testing, production, and sustainment phases
- Promote and maintain a safe, high-quality engineering environment
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical/military experience
- 5 years of professional experience developing embedded firmware in C/C for real-time or microcontroller-based systems
- Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks (standing, kneeling, crawling, etc.)
- Ability to travel up to 10% annually
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with RTOS-based embedded systems
- Experience implementing J1939 CAN protocols
- FPGA experience using Libero and VHDL
- Experience developing PC-based test or diagnostic tools
- Background working with military requirements or military prime contractors
- Experience interfacing firmware with power electronics systems
- Familiarity with manufacturing or production environments
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
- Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality and safety
