What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher - Deaf/Hard of Hearing position at ESC of Lake Erie West?
JOB SUMMARY
The Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing provides educational support and consultation services to deaf and hard of hearing students in collaboration with district personnel. The Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing provides both direct services to students and consulting services to the student’s classroom teachers, other school personnel, and students who are not deaf/hard of hearing.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ohio State Board of Education license as an Intervention Specialist or certificate/license for Education of the Handicapped K-12
- Hearing Handicapped or Hearing Impaired endorsement
- Provide an evaluation of student needs; select appropriate, nondiscriminatory screening and assessment tools
- Interpret assessment information to teachers, students and parents
- Provide consultation to teachers, parents, other classroom students, administrators, support staff and other agencies regarding the needs of students who are deaf/hard of hearing
- Provide support to students and school personnel using assistive devices
- Provide services for students who have differing communication styles (e.g. auditory/oral, ASL, sign supported speech)
- Provide support for instructional assistants, interpreters, captionists and note takers
- Meet regularly with the support team and provide support staff with appropriate materials and information about current best practices for dear/hard of hearing students
- Provide direct instruction and work cooperatively with classroom teachers to assist students in classroom assignments and to support IEP goals in the following areas – auditory skills, vocabulary, language development, reading and self-advocacy
- Participate in IEP/ETR meetings for students served; coordinate planning for instructional and behavioral strategies with the IEP team
- Assist in modifications of the educational environment for students who are deaf/hard of hearing
- Acts as resource person for classroom teachers regarding research based interventions, adaptations, assessments and resource materials for deaf/hard of hearing students.
- Maintain accurate and complete student records and records of provided services; prepare and submit all required reports
- Develop the communication and self-advocacy skills of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student
