Assistant Technical Director (Theatre)

Position Summary

The Assistant Technical will assist in all aspects of theatre and other productions at Shelton State Community College, particularly with performance spaces related to theatrical and college event scenery, props, sound, lighting, and maintenance of studio and other technical production needs.

SALARY SCHEDULE PLACEMENT: Range of $47,029 - $65,218 based upon the 2026-2027 Alabama Community College System and Shelton State Community College Salary Schedule E3-3 to be determined by the applicant’s years of applicable experience. Applicant acknowledges that if selected for the position that applicant’s placement on the applicable salary schedule will be dependent upon the verified information provided by the applicant in accordance with the applicable work experience verification requirements stated in the official job posting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist the Technical Director in the technical production aspects for all College events
• Supervise and construct scenery for theatre productions and college events, including but not limited to carpentry, rigging, metalwork/welding, and scenic painting
• Supervise the daily shop/technical operations including supervision of student workers, hired labor, and volunteers
• Maintain a clean and orderly workplace in the scene shop and related areas on a daily basis
• Enforce safety regulations and maintain a safe environment for all productions and events and serve as a primary safety official in the absence of the Technical Director
• Assist the Technical Director in recruiting and training students and volunteers to work in the scenery studio
• Purchase supplies and equipment necessary for construction following Theatre Tuscaloosa and Shelton State purchasing policies
• Assist the Technical Director with technical rehearsals, load-ins, and strikes, including weeknight and weekend responsibilities as shared with the Technical Director and as determined by production calendar planning
• Provide technical support to Shelton State Fine Arts programs (Art, Dance, Music, Theatre), including weeknight and weekend responsibilities as shared with the Technical Director and agreed upon as per event
• Report regularly to the Technical Director on the progress of builds and other pertinent information relating to the completion of technical aspects of each production
• Maintain theatre and scene shop inventory and equipment including, but not limited to items related to the following: lighting, sound, woodworking, metalworking, props, furniture, sock scenery pieces
• Open and make ready scene shop facilities each day in time for shop calls to commence on schedule, and shutdown/lock scene shop facilities at the end of each workday
• Assist in the instruction of Theatre Practicum, Stagecraft, and other assigned classes as needed.
• Help oversee lighting installs and focus calls for all productions
• Perform necessary physical tasks of the job such as lifting 50 lbs., repeatedly climbing ladders, and using stairways to access grids and catwalks
• Operate and/or work in an electric personnel lift at heights up to 35 ft.
• Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends

• Create and maintain a friendly work environment for students, volunteers, patrons, and co-workers
• Represent Theatre Tuscaloosa and Shelton State Community College in a professional and positive manner
• Demonstrate effective communication skills and work ethics

• Comply with policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College
• Serve on College committees as required
• Participate in professional development, compliance, and other training activities as required
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
• Three (3) or more years of work experience in construction trades such as carpentry, metalwork/welding, and rigging
• Working knowledge of drafting standards and ability to read/comprehend construction drawings

• Three (3) or more years of work experience in technical stagecraft in areas pertaining to carpentry, technical direction, lighting, or audio
• Ability to create and edit digital drawings using Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or similar computer software programs

Salary Calculation: For all positions on all Salary Schedules, the salary amount for the selected applicant is determined by step placement on the applicable schedule. Step placement is dependent upon the following: (a) all work experience in public education in Alabama and (b) all other work experience outside of public education in Alabama that, in the sole judgment of the College, directly relates to the requirements of the position. The applicant selected for the position must provide written verification(s) of this work experience within the time provided herein if such experience is to be considered in determining their initial step place on the Salary Schedule.

Format for Work Experience Verifications: Work experience verifications should be in the form of verification letters from employers and must include complete employment dates, job title(s), job duties, and an indication whether such employment was full-time or part-time, and if part-time, the average number of hours worked each week. The letters should be on official letterhead and contain an authorized personnel signature. The College’s official employment verification form is also acceptable and is available upon request. If an employment verification cannot be obtained due to a legitimate reason, for purposes of meeting minimum requirements an applicant may submit copies of other trustworthy documentation such as appointment letters, contracts, pay stubs, or W-2 forms documenting the term of employment. However, such documentation is generally insufficient for salary calculation purposes if job duties and dates of employment are not self-evident in the documentation.

Deadline for Producing Work Experience Verification: With limited exception, work experience verification documentationmust be produced prior to any official offer of employment. Work experience verification from a current employer may, upon request, be delayed until an official offer of employment. Any offer of employment at a salary step greater than zero (0) or made without prior verification of any required work experience, is contingent upon production of this documentation by the applicant within ten (10) days of the offer.
