Job Title
Sitework Laborer / Operator (Pipe Laying Experience)
Position Summary
The Sitework Laborer / Operator supports excavation, underground utility, and general sitework operations with a primary focus on storm, sanitary, and waterline installation. This role requires hands-on pipe-laying experience and the ability to safely operate common sitework equipment as needed. The position works closely with the foreman and crew to complete work safely, accurately, and efficiently while meeting project specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Underground Pipe & Utility Installation
- Assist with installation of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and waterline piping (PVC, HDPE, ductile iron, RCP, etc.).
- Set and lay pipe to line and grade using lasers, grade rods, levels, and/or string lines.
- Install fittings, couplings, gaskets, adapters, and connections; assist with tie-ins to existing utilities.
- Place, shape, and compact bedding and backfill materials to specification; assist with haunching and shading requirements.
- Assist with installation of structures and appurtenances (catch basins, inlets, manholes, valve boxes, cleanouts).
- Support testing and QA/QC (pressure testing, leakage testing, mandrel testing, as required).
Equipment Operation (General Sitework Operator Requirements)
- Safely operate and maintain sitework equipment as assigned, including (based on capability):
- Skid steer/CTL, mini-excavator, excavator, wheel loader
- Dozer, backhoe
- Compaction equipment (plate tamper, jumping jack, roller)
- Perform daily equipment inspections (fluids, grease points, wear items, safety devices) and complete basic equipment checklists.
- Operate equipment to excavate and backfill trenches, load trucks, place stone, fine grade, and support utility installation.
- Understand equipment operating limits and jobsite hazards (overhead power lines, swing radius, blind spots, underground utilities, trench edges).
- Use safe rigging/handling practices when moving pipe, structures, and materials; communicate clearly with ground crew and spotters.
- Keep equipment clean and report mechanical issues, leaks, or unsafe conditions immediately.
General Sitework & Crew Support
- Work safely around heavy equipment and act as a spotter/signal person when required.
- Assist with trenching, trench boxes/shoring, shielding, and dewatering; maintain compliance with trench safety requirements.
- Assist with grading support, site prep, material handling, and jobsite cleanup.
- Load/unload tools and materials; maintain an organized staging area and protect completed work.
Safety, Quality, and Productivity
- Follow OSHA, company, and project safety procedures, including trench safety and excavation best practices.
- Identify utility conflicts and report discrepancies immediately to the foreman/superintendent.
- Read and follow basic site plans/utility drawings, grade stakes, and layout marks.
- Meet production expectations while maintaining workmanship and safety standards.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience assisting with underground pipe installation and working in/around trenches.
- Ability to safely operate at least one common piece of sitework equipment (e.g., skid steer, mini-excavator, roller), with willingness to operate additional equipment as trained/approved.
- Working knowledge of proper pipe bedding/backfill practices and compaction fundamentals.
- Ability to use or assist with grade-setting tools (laser, level, tape, grade rod).
- Strong teamwork and communication skills; ability to take direction and work efficiently in a crew environment.
- Reliable attendance and transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 10 (or willingness to obtain).
- Competent Person (Trenching/Excavation) training (or willingness to obtain).
- Confined Space awareness/training.
- Experience with trench boxes, shoring systems, and/or dewatering.
- Ability to fine grade and/or set pipe independently to line and grade.
- Experience working around live traffic/work zones (as applicable).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry 50–75 lbs regularly.
- Ability to climb in/out of equipment and trenches; kneel, bend, and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and on uneven terrain.
Work Environment
Outdoor construction environment with exposure to dust, noise, heavy equipment, uneven ground, and changing weather. Work may involve early start times, overtime, and occasional weekend work depending on project schedules.
