Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations across multiple entities, ensuring compliance with GAAP, cannabis industry regulations, and tax requirements (including IRS 280E). This role manages consolidated financial reporting, budget development, and internal controls while leading the accounting team. The Controller will partner closely with the CFO, executive team, and external auditors to provide transparency, accuracy, and strategic financial insights that drive growth and operational efficiency. Experience in public accounting firms and CPA licenses are preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight & Reporting

Direct the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidated financial statements, including variance analysis.

Ensure compliance with GAAP, cannabis industry standards, and regulatory reporting requirements.

Maintain cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and treasury oversight to support long-term growth.

Oversee tax compliance, including 280E planning, state/local cannabis taxes, and other applicable filings.
Internal Controls & Compliance

Develop and maintain internal control policies to protect company assets and ensure financial integrity.

Supervise all audit activities (internal, external, tax, and inventory) and serve as the primary point of contact for auditors.

Ensure compliance with banking requirements and cannabis-specific financial regulations.

Implement processes to maintain compliance with reporting systems such as METRC.
Team Leadership

Hire, train, and supervise accounting staff, ensuring strong technical skills and cross-entity support.

Promote a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous process improvement within the finance team.

Collaborate across departments to integrate workflows, systems, and technology platforms.
Operational & Strategic Support

Partner with leadership to analyze financial data and provide insights for strategic decision-making.

Monitor KPIs, inventory cost data, and operational performance metrics.

Advise management on financing, liquidity, and investment strategies.

Support M&A activity, new brand launches, and expansion initiatives.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred).

7–10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
- Experience in Public Accounting Firms

Strong knowledge of GAAP, consolidated reporting, and internal control frameworks.

Cannabis industry, vertically integrated company or highly regulated CPG experience strongly preferred.

Expertise in tax planning and compliance, including 280E, multi-entity structures with intercompany transactions, and inventory accounting.

Experience with multiple ERP/accounting softwares (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, or similar) to help implement a new ERP system.

Proven ability to lead accounting teams in dynamic, fast-paced environments.

Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with executives, auditors, and regulators.
