Job Description: Human Resources Generalist (HR-Focused with Payroll Support)
Position Summary
The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for managing day-to-day HR operations while providing backup and support for payroll processing. This role serves as a key partner to leadership and employees, ensuring HR policies, employee relations, compliance, and people processes are executed effectively. Payroll responsibilities are supportive in nature and coordinated with internal or external payroll resources.
Key Responsibilities
Human Resources (Primary Focus)
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee HR questions and support
- Administer employee lifecycle processes including onboarding, offboarding, and personnel changes
- Manage employee relations matters, including coaching, investigations, and issue resolution
- Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, and employee handbook
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
- Coordinate benefits administration, including enrollments, changes, and employee education
- Support performance management processes, reviews, and employee development initiatives
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records within the HRIS
- Partner with leadership on workforce planning, organizational changes, and HR best practices
- Support recruitment efforts including job postings, screening, interviews, and hiring coordination
- Assist with training, engagement, and culture initiatives as needed
Payroll Support (Secondary Focus)
- Support payroll processing by collecting, reviewing, and submitting payroll data (hours, PTO, changes)
- Coordinate with payroll providers or internal payroll resources to ensure timely and accurate payroll
- Assist with payroll audits, reconciliations, and issue resolution
- Respond to employee payroll questions and escalate complex issues as needed
- Maintain payroll-related records in compliance with company policies and regulations
Qualifications
Required
- 3 years of experience in Human Resources, with exposure to payroll processes
- Strong knowledge of HR practices, employment laws, and compliance requirements
- Experience working with HRIS and payroll systems
- High level of discretion and confidentiality
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
- HR certification (PHR, SHRM-CP, or similar)
- Experience supporting payroll through a third-party provider
- Experience in a small to mid-size business environment
Work Environment & Expectations
This position is primarily HR-focused, with payroll responsibilities typically accounting for a smaller portion of the role. The role may require adherence to payroll and benefits deadlines and close collaboration with leadership and employees across the organization.
